TASMANIA'S first requiem mass was probably celebrated aboard a sailing ship, says a Catholic priest who has researched the historic event. Launceston priest Terry Southerwood said the requiem mass for Frenchman Jacques-Laurent Boucher in 1793 was probably not held on Tasmanian soil.
