Port: The left side of the boat. Starboard: The right side. Sheets: Ropes used to hoist, douse and adjust (trim) the sails. Rudder: The paddle on the back of the boat that provides steerage. You pull the rudder handle, or tiller, opposite the direction you want to go. Center board: A removable board that acts as a keel on small boats. Helps to stabilize and steer the boat. Mainsail: The big sail.
