Plain sailing

The train rolls out of London's Liverpool Street at 6.38am on the dot. Winding past the grimy tower blocks of the East End, then the burgeoning 2012 Olympics site at Stratford, we're soon ploughing through an Essex countryside of flattish green and yellow fields, overtaking the cars and trucks motoring up the A12 dual carriageway that runs parallel to the rail line.
