New (to me) Spirit 23k

I bought a 1978 Spirit 23k from a friend that had too many sailboats. I've already learned a lot from lurking on this forum so I want to thank all of you that have posted about the things you've done to/for your Spirit. I've had the opportunity to take her for a few short sails on the Neuse River near New Bern, NC.

Here's a picture of her needing a little TLC. I've cleaned her up since and given her some new bottom paint. She still needs some work but I'm looking forward to enjoying Maverick (soon to get a name change) in the years to come.

If you're on the Neuse and see her out there, give me a shout.

Wanna clean my boat up now? She looks great!

Thanks Shnool. I'll pass on the offer to clean yours though. As much fun as I had doing mine, I'd hate to deprive you of that joy.

Congrats on getting a Spirit! Awesome little sailboats. Tough as nails and loads of fun .

What is the winch on your starboard cabin top running? It looks like you have a spinnaker setup, I would love to see some pics of how that is rigged. I have been contemplating getting one setup on my Zippey.

Re: New (to me) Spirit 23k

Thanks blobaugh. I was amazed at the performance improvement after I cleaned up and painted the bottom. She felt like a completely different boat.

That winch is used for the main halyard. I guess the intent is to allow the main to be raised without having to go forward but my main is set up with sliders instead of a bolt rope and they won't stay in the track without some help so someone has to be at the mast anyway. I need to work on the keeper that is supposed to prevent that from happening.

I don't have a spinnaker although I would love to try that someday.

Re: New (to me) Spirit 23k

I redid the bottom of my boat recently. It was a mess! I had someone else paint it and they put latex house paint on it instead of the marine paint I had purchased :S. The critters in salt water loved that. Went from 1.5 knots to 6.5 with the motor! It was a quick trip back from the boat yard.

For your main, go look on the mast where you insert the sliders into the track. There is probably a small hole that runs side to side. Put the sliders in the track and slide a cotter pin into that and you should be good to go.

Hey, I sail on the Neuse sometimes myself. I live in Charlotte, NC but trailer over for some trips. We'll have to meet up next time I am out that way.
