Re: Spirit 23 Swing Keel Cable Mod Dwg

I had the same problem last summer with my NA 23. I had the boat lifted, crawled under and replaced the broken cable. Now I suspect the keel is stuck in the recessed keel pocket.
Has anyone ever tried modifying a dagger-board instead of a swing keel? ?

I guess you mean modifying from a swing keel to a dagger board? Other than the work involved, (major) why would you want to install a dagger board so it takes up valuable cabin space? The slot would have to extend beyond the water line. If you hit something with it, well there it goes... hope you would have reinforced the hull cause that may rip up too . Can a dagger board be made to swing as well? Oh yea, defeats the purpose.

I guess you could say I'm not too fond of the idea. But I'm a little confused here, if you had the swing keel out last summer, why would the keel be stuck now?

Re: Spirit 23 Swing Keel Cable Mod Dwg

After a little more research I agree, a retro fit dagger board probably wouldn't be feasible. I guess I'm just not a fan of the swing keel design.. the cable to keel anchor point is too close to the pivot point, resulting in a great deal of tension needed to lift it. I like the pulley system idea, I may try that next.
I think it's stuck due to barnacle build up. The keel wouldn't lift when I tried loading her on the trailer in the fall. And of course the trailer winch broke! Had to use a come-along, which caused damage to the swing keel as she climbed onto the trailer. It's all part of the fun though!

Re: Spirit 23 Swing Keel Cable Mod Dwg

Swing keels are great...if the cable is routed correctly. I've always said this cable routing is the only poor design of this boat. I try not to take the quick fix approach to repairing boats, they will get you back, always! In your case in point, if you had of cleaned the barnacles off when the swing keel was out, you wouldn't have such problems now. It's just the way it goes. When I'm off of my main element (land) re: sea or air, I make damn sure ALL the mechanicals are 100% I don't want to be stuck on the water anytime. (in air your never stuck if you know what I mean! LOL)

Re: Spirit 23 centerboard

I recently bought a spirit 23 and surprisingly everything seems to be in good repair and all of the parts are there (so far). However, I have not launched it yet. Can anyone tell me how the centerboard operates and what problems to antisipate?

Thanks

I have an 81 Spirit that has a shredded housing on the keel cable. What is the best fix?

A picture would be good. If it's just the outer covering there is a heatshrink that is available with glue on the inside that melts to form a watertite seal. Bought at any good electronic supply store, for a cheap fix. But I would replace the cable, if the housing is shredded it's likely damaged on the inside as well. While your at it replace the inner cable or at the very minimum inspect it's full length for chaffing damage, fraying, corrosion or all of the above. I hope your boat is out of the water cause it'll leak from the shredded cable sheath if it's not.

This thread was created for the cable mod, not to answer questions, in the future can you please start another thread...more people get to see it that way as well.
