Javelin mast - twisted hinge plates

After completing a lovely maiden shake-down sail we forgot to remove the locking pin BEFORE unfastening the side stays. The result is the light wind caught the mast and twisted the hinge plates before we could catch it . It wouldn't be a problem to straighten them out, but I'd like to re-enforce them as well - or re-design stouter plates. If anyone has been down this road and has done a re-design they're happy with, I'd love to know what you did.
thanks in advance!
