O'day Tempest keel / hull joint

Hello everyone! I am sure that we are all chomping at the bit to get our boats back in the water. I have 2 questions regarding the hull keel connection on my sailboat. The boat is a 1965 O'day Tempest with a 1250# CAST IRON keel. i stress cast iron, because they changed to lead later on.

The first question is: There is a gap between the hull and keel, no more than an 1/8 th of an inch and it doesn't appear to run the length of the keel /hull connection. I am more interested in getting her in the water and getting as much sailing time out of it this summer. I have heard that a good solution is to clean out the crack and use Marinetek epoxy, and then use a good grade coat of bottom paint on it. Any Yea's or Nays on this?

Question 2: If I were to dig a little deeper and remove all the paint from the keel and fair it, what would be used to seal the keel? Would I have to use a ferrous metal primer, or would the fairing compound adhere sufficiently to the keel without it?

I have a very similar with the same boat, an O'Day Tempest.

Having just purchased the boat and sanding it for bottom paint I found a poor faring job between the keel and hull that let water in. A couple of blisters were detected too so this is my plan to fix it:
  • Remove all the old faring job I can get off.
  • Dry the area as much as possible, perhaps using a heat gun briefly.
  • Sand and prime the keel with INTERLUX Promocon
  • Sand the hull.
  • Use INTERLUX Watertite Epoxy Filler Interprotect to fill the space, seal the area.
    I also plan to use it to fill any area, above and below the waterline, that needs the gel coat touched up. I'd like the hull to be smooth.
  • Sand hull smooth.
  • Use INTERLUX Interprotect 2000E Barrier Coat below the entire waterline.
  • Use INTERLUX VC-17M for bottom paint.

I've chosen to use all Interlux to ensure there are no unintended chemical reactions and yes, I plan to take at least 5 to 7 working days to get the done as I do not want to have to revisit this problem again.

Any old Salts out there with thoughts on the plan and/or products?

What advice would you offer?

I think you guys are on the right track. I am a big fan of Marinetek to fill the void.

My first boat was a Tempest, met my wife while working on the keel before my first launch. That was 34 years ago last month.

I would use straight West epoxy on the keel after grinding it to bright white metal. Put five coats on, then do whatever fairing you want. Straight epoxy has worked for me on steel keels, I do not think the Interprotect is strong or hard enough to coat steel for the long run. Also Watertite is a bear to sand and fair, and I dont believe is intended to fill large voids, use it for underwater divots, not above the waterline. I'd use an epoxy/silica mix for the keel joint. be neat as it is also a bear to sand.

You mentioned West Systems:

For straight epoxy are you suggesting 105 Epoxy Resin with 206 Slow Hardener? Giving a 20 min pot life, 90 min working time and a 10 hr cure.



Could I also assume you would suggest the same Epoxy with the 406 Colloidal Silica filler to fill the area?


Sorry to get specific, but I don't like to make a shopping mistake

As far as faring compounds, what would you suggest? I see West Systems also has a low density filler as a faring additive. 407 Low-Density Filler.

Would you suggest that or another faring compound?

I'll still like to go with the InterProtect 2000e barrier coat all around with VC-17M regardless of the epoxy, fairing and filler underneath unless there is something I'm over looking.

Your thoughts and insights would be greatly appreciated.

I just got off the phone will West Systems and they suggested their G-Flex epoxy with their 407 Additive for both the filling and fairing...

Just a little confused here but I'll give it a try.

hey dm,
I see you are getting as intense about it as I planned to! Unfortunately I realize that I don't have the time to do as much as I originally planned. My boat is on the hard at the Marina and they are starting to put them back in real quick. Plus, Spring was a real bear here in the North East. Luckily the weather seems to have finally broken and I think I am going to fill my keel Tomorrow. I am planning to use the marinetek. I have heard a few people give it the thumbs up. Nothing against West System Epoxy, just I don't think I need that much as their smallest can. I will probably sand it out and prime / or seal the repair patch. Then I am going to turn it over to the Marina and have them skip sand the bottom and put a coat of paint on it. Good luck and take a couple of before and after photos, I'd like to see how it turns out!

Any quick ideas on what product I can use as a sealer/primer/barrier before the Marina paints the bottom? ....and once again, thanks, all input is appreciated.

I didn't work on the boat at all last year but got back on it this year.

This past weekend I finished the keel joint repair and thought I'd list out the steps I took here in case someone else goes about the same challenge:

First, background:

There was a shoddy repair of this joint that seemed to retain water better than a camel.

The repair consisted of the use of 5200 in the joint, encased with a very light fairing compound on top of bottom paint on both the hull and the keel. That was surrounded by a couple of wraps of fiber cloth with epoxy, more light faring compound, an thick barrier coat topped off with VC17.

My repair consisted of:

1) Grinding out the old repair. (I chipped all the 5200 I could get to, I figured if I couldn't get it out after 3 days then Neptune intended for it to stay.)

2) Removing all bottom paint.

3) Sandblasting the keel.

4) Wetting out the join with epoxy and putting a coat of epoxy on the entire keel.

5) Using 406 filler with epoxy and filling the joint.

6) Applying 4 more coats of epoxy on the keel.

7) Using 407 filler with expxy as a faring compound. << This is the step I am at right at this moment.


I plan on adding a couple of coats on any area that seems to have a thing gel coat or where I may have sanded through.

I then will fair the keel and the hull smooth.

And finally apply Interprotect as a barrier coat and apply VC17m.

How does that plan and repair sound?
