ODay Javelin 14

Recently acquired a 1980s Javelin 14 - love sailing it but need advice with two things. The rudder won't stay down - any thoughts? Also, has anyone shortened the tiller so that it is easier to change sides when tacking or jibing?

kick up rudders are designed to "kick up" there are many ways that various manufactures use to hold them down. friction, clips, lines with a block and cleat. Don't shorten your tiller until you get used to the boat.. you can stand up and need a tiller extension when your hard on the wind.
