Vire 7 Gas Engine

The boat I am looking at has both a Vire 7 and an outboard. The owner said the Vire needs a new carburetor and would probably run ok though she hasn't been turned over in many years. Should I leave it in for ballast and balance and just use the outboard, or do you think getting the old iron horse running again would be beneficial?

What boat? These engines were used in some of the smaller Bayfields, IIRC, and a few others including the Viking 28 by Ontario Yachts.

Chances are pretty long that you can get the Vire running, but if it's only a carb and you can find one (assuming it spins over still) it may be worth the effort. Certainly from an aesthetic point of view the boat will 'look' better without an outboard on the transom and she'll perform better under power in chop.

OTOH if you choose to stick with the OB I'd consider removing the original, creating more storage space (or an extra/bigger water tank could replace the weight) and get rid of the drag of the prop and shaft etc.

Option 3 would be to repower with a small diesel.. but you'd be unlikely to get your money out of that. Though that's not a big deal if this is going to be a longish-term 'keeper'..

To some extent this will depend largely on the boat in question.

This is a great suggestion and one that I considered. Maybe give it a shot, see if she will turn over, and could always part out the engine I suppose.

I think that the Vire is no longer made or supported in the way that Don Moyer supports the Atomic 4 gasoline engine.
My friend who has an O'Day 25', who I call "old man trouble", because he is a good racer uses a 9.9 HP (or less) outboard engine mounted off the transom.
Extra storage space is always a plus even with the relatively big cabin size of the O'Day 25 CB model. You can figure out ways of providing the missing ballast of the engine: water tanks, metal ballast, storage etc.
It is a good boat AND it is trailerable.

I have found some Vire sites and most of the parts that you have available now are aftermarket parts that are cheaper than the original, but it is definitely getting harder to find the parts needed to keep the old clunker working. May be in interesting project on land, but it is true..I could always use the storage and drop a few hundred pounds of needless ballast.

From what I can gather, the Vire was a decent little engine, taken over by Westerbeke. The major drawback that most people had with them was that they didn't like to idle or run at slow speeds and tended to cut out. Most people kept the RPM's up and would just drop it into gear for a split second and then back into neutral...repeat.

Guess I am still leaning toward just going with the outboard and scraping the Vire for parts.
