Having painted aircraft, I'm familiar with Alumigrip, which is the aviation version of Awlgrip and know that the stuff is bulletproof. It's a true Polyethelene Urethane and puts off copius amounts of IsoCyanates as it cures. Get a good mask, set your guns to 35 PSI with a viscosity of no less than 15 and have fun. Viscosity settings of more than 17 are the root cause of orange peal. Do not spray in direct sunlight! After prep with a good Epoxy primer, spray a light even wet coat as your tack coat. Spray the second coat wet and even. Get yourself a piece of Fiberboard, prime the shiny side and practice on that until you can coat nicely without runs or sags. Do NOT dry spray this stuff as it's very hard to buff smooth. Have fun. PS. I would rent a 2 gallon pot to spray that thing or you'll spend more time refilling than painting and use a Retarder in temps higher than 85*.

So I did sneak in a little sail last night after the thunderstorm blew through. I had dinner with my 5 year old and my Sailing Buddy with the IP at my favorite spot in Deale, MD: Skippers Landing. I don't know if you guys have tried it but the food is fantastic. Several beers and a crab-cake platter and we were stuffed and relaxed. (My daughter had Apple Juice and Chicken Tenders)

Sorry I haven't replied...but I went out sailing today with my friend's 14-year-old son. He's never been on a big sailboat, even though he said he has the Boy Scout Sailing Merit Badge. We had a blast. It was supposed to rain and blow five to ten knots, with two-to-three foot seas. Instead, it was sunny, about 83 degrees, sunny and blowing a solid 20 knots with gusts up to 25 or so, and three-to-four foot seas and building.

Man....what a blast... a bit brain fried at the moment... just got back. Late evening sailing too.. a bit better on not brain frying the poor dog, but the brain already got fried earlier in the day.

Both products are pretty bulletproof... I would warn against either if you need to shrink wrap your boat, as I believe it is contra-indicated for shrink wrapping...something to do with the trapped moisture causing problems and bubbling the paint... but you might want to check on that.
I asked him on scale of 1-100 how the day rated... he gave it a 105 and said that he'll sail any chance he gets.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I am leaning towards Awlgrip. If I am going to suck toxic fumes I might as well use the one that lasts longer. How much would it suck to get Asthma and then have to look at chalked paint!

I need to name my boat and I saw PBooty had a few good ones. I saw a few really funny ones recently that I love!

"Menace to Sobriety" This could work for me.

"Suck my Deck" Probably too offensive.

"Gidget Goes to Hell" I like this one and kind of Punk Rock....

I thought of something more traditional like naming her after my Scottish Grandmother: Mary Ramsay...But seems kind of boring.

fumes

It is not the fumes of 2 part linear polyurethane that will kill you, it is the micro droplets when sprayed. You absolutey need an air supply or you will glue your lungs together.

Definitely...I take it seriously. If I can't work out the forced air situation, I will roll and tip....a God-Awful way to paint a boat! So come, Menace to Sobriety is totally hilarious! But is it too motor boatey?

I bet a boat named "Menace to Sobriety" gets a few additional looks from the local harbor police and USCG.

Just remember, the FCC and USCG frown upon boat names, however cutesy, that sound like obscene or otherwise prohibited language over the radio. My friend got in trouble for a boat he had brought over from Thailand. Phuket Yawl apparently didn't go over well with the locals..
