The area between the mainland and Catalina can be flat as a strap, or rough as a cob.

Angel's Gate. Kevlar, is that towards the Long Beach end or the San Pedro end. It's funny that I havent sailed L.A. Harbor area much as Iv'e been kickin around So-Cal for several decades now. I have sailed a boat or two out of the area near San Pedro but that was only to get them to San Diego. The area I came out of, the locals refered to as "hurricane gultch".

Sailing on now

Angels Gate is the San Pedro end where Hurricane Gulch blows every afternoon
and especially hard now in the warmer days. We had a house overlooking the harbor and watched the cup boats practice a few years back, now we have moved west on the coast a few miles. Fox, your night time sailing sounds magical. I have some more adventures I will share when I return, right now I am gone for a month or so. It was very entertaining ro read all the posts. Keep it going you guys. Sail on! bye

[QUOTE=Surfesq]"anyone who posts more than once a day to a sailing forum, is neither a sailor nor has a life." Dude...that was your second post today...Doh!

But, hey, I never claimed to be a sailor!

I'm just gunkholing around out here.

Looks like you guys kept it under control yesterday while I was working! lol. KevlarP: Wow, that sounds like an excellent ride. I sailed from Long Island to Catalina a number of years ago with one of my brothers. It was terrific but nothing compared to what you have descibed. The only thing that I think could compare (slightly) is the sail from Newport to Block Island. The waters off Rhode Island can get pretty radical pretty quickly.
Mike and Dewey: Yes, religion is a fascinating topic to discuss. I love to talk about it on a long sail with friends who are comfortable enough with their own beliefs to really get into it.
As for the Quakers. They really are a great example of the big lie in our country about it being founded on the basis of religious tolerance. For example, in States like Massachusetts they used to make them leave the State on foot and then tar and feather in every town until they got to the border.
PB: You are starting to come around....
Let's be clear about something here. There is nothing wrong with a sailor fixing up his boat. In fact, its a necessary part of sailing in my opinion. I think it strengthens the bond between you and your boat. (If that's possible).

They sure can - been caught in some pretty nasty weather in RI & Block Island Sounds. On the other hand, as shown by this pic of windless conditions during our recent passage to Block Island, the ocean could be like a mill pond . . .

EDIT - I deleted the photo after realizing the file may be too large for some dial-up viewers. Plus, it's a "Fight Club" thread, not a photo gallery.

Ain't gonna happen Tommy boy. As I mentioned way back in the beginning....been there, done that....much prefer where I am now. Wednsday was a "play day", so I could get out of the sun for a day. Ya see, for me, it's all about being on the boat. Doesn't matter how fast or slow, or where I go. All that matters is enjoying my time and being alive. Don't need stimulation for that. Just an appreciation for the wonder of the sun rising, and the moon taking it's turn.

Pictures are good! I have been very lucky going out to Block..always caught it with pretty good wind. Here is a funny story...I had stowed my heavy Danforth anchor during the sail up from Annapolis so I had only my Fortress up top. I decided to drop a hook in the Harbor and went to party with a friend who came over from Boston. My buddy and got pretty liquored up and took the water-taxi out to the boat. (About 2:00 a.m.). When we arrived...No boat!!!! It turned out that my boat had dragged nearly a half a mile until some chap was nice enough to tie us off on his boat. We learned the next morning that the harbor is notorious for having a poor bottom for anchoring.

Dissagree: This is an area of Philosophy that has premisis based on Faith. Once one has accepted a set of premisis one shall draw the universe based on those. Faith based premisis are self sustaining, resulting in self fullfilling prophesy.

If I can set the rules, I can "prove" the moon is made of cheese.

I am more concerned in my earlier statements that one religious group or another not set the laws of the land based on a narrow interpretation of their belief set. Radical Example in another country: Taliban. Disclaimer: I am in no way claiming evangelical christians are as radical as the Taliban. Simply that laws totaly based on religous beliefs do not serve all the people.
