Books and Authors

Last night you were listing books.

Don't forget Tristan Jones!! If ever an old sea dog would fit this thread it would be Tristan!

How about when he and the sister of a Anglican Bishop friend stole a telephone pole from a municipal construction site in France because he need a new mast!!!

I recommend all his books for his wit and amazing stories, but "One Hand for Yourself One for the Ship: The Essentials of Single Handed Sailing" is chock full of cruising tips as well.

Yes that is a good book, I have read my copy many times. I think we need to stir the board up again!
Why is that there are so many boats tied up in the marina on breezy days. Are these guys and gals really sailors? I think they are posers.

Angry To own and not sail . . .

What's that old saying? To know and not do, is to not know. ??

How about To own and not sail, is to not own!!

I'm stuck in Indiana for now [long story; requires rum]. I would give my eye teeth to be back on the water. And yet, on any given summer weekend at Lake Michigan marinas well over 90% of slips still have the damn boat in them.

It's only worse when you see them sitting at the dock having cheese and crackers. And you know it has been months if not years since they untied a spring line.

Aaaaarrrrrrggghhhhh, matey!

Exactly, and why is that the most expensive boats in the marina tend to be the least used. You always see the guy with the beat up and faded Hunter or C & C motoring out on a breezy day!

Outstanding! It's such a great sport/passion/hobby. When you sail, you are constantly challenged and stimulated. You are always thinking...How can I trim that main to get better shape, should I release the outhaul; How can I get to where I am going the quickest most efficient way?
When you sail a catamaran, you get up on one hull and work the main and the tiller to keep the hull out of the water. It's a dance. Try that with your boat the next time it blows hard. I mean make it heel and experiment with the tiller and the main...learn to feel the wind and the characteristics of your boat. Now watch your speed as you alter the heeling point of the boat. You will find that you can surf the waves and pick up speed as you pick through the chop. It's Fun!

Because it just seems to piss off some people and we like that...Here is more history of Rum:

Nelson and His Navy - Grog

While sailing once our Captain
who was a jolly dog,
One day sarv'd out to every mess a double share of grog,
Ben Backstay he got tipsy all to his hearts content,
And being half-seas over why overboard he went,
A shark was on his larboard
sharks don't for manners stand,
But grapple all that they come near like lawyer-sharks on land,
We threw out Ben some tackling of saving him in hopes,
But the shark he bit his head off so he couldn't see the ropes,
Withou a head 'is ghost appears all on the briny lake,
He piped all hands ahoy and cried 'Lads, warning by me take',
By drinking I lost my life so lest my fate you meet,
Why never mix your liquor lads but always drink it straight,

Race On the Big Lake WOW

So last night...After the small craft advisory we stayed inside the bay but wow it was blowing again....

Since we are in the JIB&Main fleet we start first in about 20knts of wind and it was interesting..Almost got run over by a San Juan 28 and then got off the start late. The San Juan Blew out its main right away so we are killing that boat.

Came around the first mark and reaching to the second and Bang/Crack/Thud behind us. A tripp 26 broke it mast right in Half carrying a spinnaker in these winds. Wow that was a sight... All in all a great race. It just sucked that oiur final upwind leg my trimmer got the nastiest override I have ever encountered and we only tacked five times trying to get it out. Oh well didn't win but damn it was fun...

Not sure the one that tore was worth $5k seeing it tore in two in 25kt wind but I'm sure the one to replace it was. A huge sail it was.
