You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Thoughts from been there done that

Sufesq,

Optimum bottom job would be to remove the old bottom paint and barrier coat and go back with new barrier system and two coats of bottom paint. With West Marine barrier system it is recommended that you apply four coats of barrier paint alternating between white and gray to be sure all areas get coated. Removal of old paint and barrier coat usually requires sand blasting or paint stripper. Having used the stripper I think I would try the sand blasting.

I would recommend you think about rolling the coats on in lieu of spraying for several reasons. I don’t believe spraying will save much if any time given the masking and protection from over spray you will need. Masking for rolling would be much less. The barrier coat is a two part paint that has a fairly short pot life and is really suited to rolling on. Cleaning spray equipment could be problematic. In addition, the bottom paint is viscous and I would think not easily sprayed.

Another item is the out of the water life of the bottom paint. When the final coat goes on there is a time limit for staying on the hard. The system I used required the boat to be in the water in 2 months.

The final item I think is the time factor. I am sure you could spray the bottom faster than rolling but I was able to roll my entire bottom in about two hours. Compared to the time to prepare the bottom, the actual time to paint the bottom was not much.

Hope some of these thoughts are helpful.

I am planning on rolling the bottom for sure. (Actually that is one job where I will pay the yard to paint! ). I am going to spray the hull only.

Thanks I will. Its a relatively slow boat but I have always loved ketch rigs. And the interior is huge which I love. But now I have some incentive to get it done. I am accepting kick backs in the pool! lol.

Wow....I need to go to the Great Lakes

The arrest list for Illinois Department of Natural Resources for one week was too long to republish. Here are the highlights:

A CPO made two arrests for public nudity (under Ad. Rule 110) at the Wolf Creek State Park beach after a couple engaged in sexual intercourse in the water. It was quite disturbing to the other patrons. (No doubt the Sailnet complainers).

CPOs handled several domestic disturbances around and on Lake Shelbyville. One arrest was made for disorderly conduct. They also assisted Moultrie County Sheriff's Department with the capture of a subject wanted for a battery at Findlay Marina.

After two previous warnings from site staff and CPO, a District Sergeant cited an intoxicated subject for quiet hours violation at Walnut Point State Park' s Grey Tent Campground. When the Sergeant approached the campsite, the offender and another male were urinating next to their tent and loudly stated that they couldn't even urinate quietly. They were about 100 feet from the nearest privy toilet.
