Fight Club____for Sailors

This my thread...I would like to think of it as a kind of Fight Club. (Without blowing up anything!).

You can say whatever you want. (Within the Rules of this Site)...But you don't have to apologize for your comments. If you disagree with me or anyone who responds. Write it.

Here is the Scope of this Thread:

1. If your boat sits in the slip for more than 28 days a month. You don't sail.
2. If you are simply driving a floating RV...You don't sail.
3. If you think a woman can't sail her 27 foot O'Day out of her slip singlehanded...You don't Sail.
4. If you reef your sail in 15 knots of wind because you don't like to heel....You don't sail.
5. If you don't go out when it's blowin 25 cause it's too windy...You don't sail.
6. If you don't like the taste of Rum...You don't sail.

You are a sailor if:

1. You are somewhere in the world on your boat. (Cruising...Racing...Drinking...It Doesn't matter).
2. You watch the NOAA Website and plan your appointments around the High Pressure System pushing out that nasty low
3. You like to see your rail wet.
4. Your golf clubs are dusty.
5. You stink of Rum.
6. You are leaving as soon as possible to sail somewhere in the world.
7. You smell of salt water at Sunday Dinner.
8. Your slip neighbor says..."I thought you left the marina because I have not seen your boat in a while.".
9. You watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High with your kid and you think..."All I need is 32 feet of waterline and 18 knots Dude."
10. If you can't find someone to sail...You just go out on your own.

Don't like rum, don't play golf.

Kalhua.
...and my archery gear has a place on the boat.

Sadly, I don't sail by your definition. Primarily because I don't have a boat, but I love rum, getting my rail wet and hate golf. I'm trying to get on somebody (anybody) elses boat though...does that make me a sailer wannabe?

If you like rum as much as you seem to that makes you a drunk; not a sailor!!

Sailing does get in your blood... I got the rails wet on my j/24 friday... and had the others on the boat suggesting I should reef...

Do I qualify?

I love you guys.....
Here is your first assignment:
Go out on an 18 knot plus day:
Put on your autopilot and climb up on the high rail and look down into the deck and down the forward lines and aft...Feel the power...Surf the wind.

EBS001: It's called Grog. You should really check it out.
Pluscard: Yes, exactly. That is what sailing is all about.
Sonofasonofasailor: Dude: Get a boat. In the meantime, Yes, you get it.
Sasha V: What? It's so out there it could work. You are in dude.

Let's see..... I don't like the taste of Rum, or any hard liquor, for that matter. If my rail is in the water, I'm losing boat speed. I put in a reef because I'm a prudent singlehander, and it's a lot easier to shake one out than to put it in. And I don't go out, simply because it's blowing 25 knots.

But, then again, I have no one to prove anything to except myself. Nor any need to accept any label that anyone else places on me. And, best of all.......I don't really give a rat's hinny what anyone else thinks about me. I sail, because I want to. Not to impress, or please anyone but myself, nor, to say I'm better than anyone else.

Regards,

So, you like to go slow....And you are afraid of big winds. That's cool. Do you own a cat?

But if you like to feel to the wind in your face...The spray of sea salt....The feeling you get when you know your boat is pushing the limit....Then you belong.

Remember John....No one can see you dipping a rail. There is no one to impress. (Unless your peer group has a telephoto lens).
You either have the stones to do it... or you don't.

My "Club" is out there on the water when the Weather Report says..."Small Craft Warning." Why John? Because we don't have "Small Crafts."

But I promise you this John....we will waive to you as we go by you on the dock...We will be the ones totally getting off.

I feel sad for you if all you see in sailing is an adreneline rush. But, to each their own. I'm on my boat (and no, it's not a cat) 24/7, and sail from one interesting place to the next. When I choose, and as I choose. So maybe I'm just a poor lowly cruiser, but I don't really care what label you want to put on it. I'm out here living the life, whether hanging on the hook, or making passage.
