I'm an adicted audiophile junkie and while I can tell a difference on my two chanel reference system played through a set of 12k B&W nautilus 802's it is minimal and not something you will be able to discern with a $129.00 car stereo and a pair of crappy boat speakers. 128k on the other hand sucks! If you want even better sound than 192 go to 320. I just accept the fact that when I'm listening to my iPod it is not critical listening. When I listen critically I'm usually listening to vinyl or SACD anyway and not a crappy CD..

You make good sense. I'd never use an Ipod other than as a storage system for playing through the boat gear which is better than a crap car stereo and being improved over what we have right now.
I'm more of a music junkie than an audiophile so probably 192 is the answer for me. I have been ripping at 320 but take your point. For what I want 192 would be good enough and going on for half the storage size.
On the other hand I keep a couple of hundred cds aboard in a 200 cd case that doesn't take up much more room than a couple of books. That, combined with , say , a 200 gig laptop should be able to satisfy my needs.

With all this technology, shouldn't we be at the point where someone makes a small receiver that you can mount in your car or boat or home, that picks up a signal from the ipod without a wire and sends it to speakers without a wire? I have a laptop and an airport, so its close. Even if it was plug and play it would be alright. Car and home receivers take up so much space. If I am not using cd's, how much space would a car stereo really take up? Personally, I am done with cd's. Yes, I know the quality is not as good, but neither are my ears. And I am tired of all the clutter in my life. I want a system that is wireless and I can download everything off the internet and beam the signal all over the freakin' place. SD, anything out there yet?

They already make small FM transmitters for the iPod and other MP3 players, like the Belkin Tunecast, which allow you to create a micro FM radio station and broadcast the music to any nearby FM radio.
Sonos, also makes a wireless home entertainment system that has wireless extension units that connect via WiFi.
A few companies have made Bluetooth-based wireless headphones for use with MP3 players.
The real problem with wireless technology is two-fold. One, you still need wires for long-term power. Two, you need to have some way to control the iPod from the remote location, and often that isn't possible.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Death of an Australian Icon
Australia has produced a few world class rock groups. Some of the best were AC/DC, Rose Tattoo and the Aztecs. AC/DC you would all know and the Aztecs lead singer , the late Billy Thorpe did work in he States for some time so maybe some of you know of him. The man who gave much of the impetus to these bands and one of the prime movers of the punk rock scene is OZ, one Lobby Lloyd, died a couple of days back. He was without doubt the doyen of Oz pub rockers and a complete larrikin to boot. Kurt Cobain even cited him as a major influence on his work.
In his days with the Aztecs Lobby's playing was worth the price of admission alone and his own band, the Coloured Ball's, gigs were something pretty special for the young and stout of ear.

Zappa, ye ye he he he, he's cool!
Since I didn't read all the posts, did anyone mention The Ramones?
I would have to include something on my "CD" from them.
