Cam...
I take it you are a smoker.
I hope, for your sake, that you believe that cigarette smoke is laced with carcinogens. Benzo[a]pyrene is one of them. Best not spread around, all would say.
I hope, for my sake, that you don't believe that it's just carcinogenic to you.
Really Cam... you really must spare me that one.... you really must.
The smoking ban is the best f****** thing that has ever happened to Scotland. Outwith trespass, I can go into any building I want, no matter who owns it.
You can too.

I thought that I said I'd leave the second-hand smoke argument out of things here. If anyone would like to debate it, open a thread on it, and I'll be along shortly to blow smoke in your face.

Rock...Nope...not one...used to be...still believe in individual rights and good science. Second hand smoke does not cause cancer...if it did...it still doesn't change my opinion on whether Sway should be able to open a smoking restaurant for adults only. Sway...you wanna do the honors with a new thread since I don't think second hand smoke qualifies as a green house gas?!

Start a new threrad on it then. It was not I that first spoke of it.
But this humbug that something like 3000 carcinogens... here are some....
polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) class to induce DNA damage in the p53 gene in human lung epithelial cells. PAH diol epoxides of benzo[a]pyrene (BPDE), chrysene (CDE), 5-methylchrysene (5MCDE), 6-methylchrysene (6MCDE), benzo[c]phenanthrene (B[c]PDE), and benzo[g]chrysene
... cease to be carcinogenic the moment you breathe them out is the sort of proof spouted by global warmists. Just imagine... the smoker breathes them in, and they kill, given time. The smoker breathes them out, and they are harmless. That fug we used to see in the bar is toxic to those that first breathed it in, but not thereafter. Of course! Otherwise smokers will have to go outside, and less cigarettes will be sold.
Apparently re-breathing harms no-one, damage is done on first pass only!!!!. Cue trumpets, fanfare, National Anthem and talk of Goverment control.
In the 1960s, the cigarette manufacturers told us that it never even harmed those that first breathed it in. Then as the tumours grew, they went quiet on that one. Now, the re-breathed stuff does no harm either.
Apparently it's safe until proven otherwise, unlike the 1960s argument. Back then it was just safe.
Was it?

Back on thread (sort of)
Most big military equipment is nuclear powered??
oh, you mean a couple of carriers and submarines..
Certainly not most...
A nuclear reactor, as used to power a submarine (specifically a 640 class SSBN like say the USS Will Rogers on which I earned my SS designation in 1982).. is a grand total of 21 inches across, the shape and size of a typical large garbage can. I think I can say that and not give away any state secrets.
The shielding used to protect the crew is the diesel fuel tanks used to hold fuel for the back up diesel, it is somewhat less effective when the tank gets emptier and for that reason the tank is filled with water when used (they separate the fuel/water when running far better than our filters do). Petroleum fuel is a wonderful barricade for alpha, beta and gamma particles, you can tell by my bald head. Actually, as measured and reported in my medical records I got less radiation per year than a typical weekend at the beach would provide.
The other equipment used to translate the heat of the reactor (steam plant, turbines, generators, and transmission for the shaft/prop) into usable power takes up the back 1/3 of the boat. It can however power up a small city and still operate the boat. Several subs were used to provide power to the main island of Hawaii after a hurricane IIRC.
I don't quite see a reactor used on a Hummer.
