I think you're missing something important here. There's a payoff for touring the country decrying global warming besides the cash one -- acceptance. Al Gore, and anybody who jumps on the eco-bandwagon, is accepted with open arms into a ferociously loyal tribe. It's the same reason people take to religion -- to be part of a group. We have a "safety in numbers" instinct and a tribal mentality that has directed most of our history, and this new tribe is no different. And Al isn't just a member -- he's a chieftain. You bet he's not going to let facts get in the way of that esteemed position.

Acceptance yes, and also a deep seated hatred of 'The American Way'. SUV driving consumers are evil, except the do-gooder eco-freaks who happen to drive them to their cabins in the woods.
