You mean the one's that send their own children to private schools? They get a pass, because ..... they mean well. They don't actually have to DO anything. Just bemoan the sad state of affairs and that is sufficent. After all, the NEA and AFT understand their position, and show their appreciation every election season for them not doing anything. Ergo, why kill the goose that lays the campaign contribution eggs?

Yup,
Those with the money vote with their feet, and as soon as those without the money, get some money, they're gone too. By my reckoning, we're now on the third or fourth generation of kids in ghettos who not only have no father, they have no relative who has completed high school. Gee, I wonder what prospects life holds for them?

Blake...I would respectfully suggest that it is not the schools responsibility to teach social skills..they do a poor enough job of teaching the skills they are paid to teach. Responsible parents can find plenty of ways to provide appropriate socialization opportunities for their kids. I'd be more concerned that my kid knew his multiplication tables and American history and could write a coherent paper than he knew how to deal with the fact that "little johnny has two mommies!" .

BTW...you are new here so let me say WELCOME. Let me also say that we REALLY like to argue about stuff here...especially in off topic. Moderators here carry no special weight and participate just like everybody else so feel free to argue right back.

I will disagree with you Cam...on the social aspect of education. Being a business owner where literally it is a solo effort, it lacks social interaction. Over a period of time, it creates someone aloof and unable to recognize nor handle social interactions of any significant depth beyond just business.

I would state from my experience the same goes for education. When a child is not exposed to other ideas, actions, and events of their peers (other children) in a common environment - they lack the ability to adapt and understand...It really is that simple...What someone learns in term of brain smarts and being able to function as a productive member of society - however is different than one able to fend for themselves emotionally and in the context of social interaction....

Blake,
You're right on those socialization skills. Every time I go to a house to work where the kids are home schooled the little miscreants keep calling me sir and asking if there's anything they can do to help. They also seem to be paying more attention to their mother's than to some video game. Some of them even have younger brother's and sister's whom they help educate too. Helping out those younger and smaller than one's self to learn what has already been learned by one's self--nah, that's socially useless. Better lemme tell yous wheres babies come from and shows yous hows to puts a scum bag over a banana. That'd be a social skill, eh?

RainBabe,
Welcome. I forgot to say, Welcome, before I lit into you. Glad you're here.

Please tell me one social skill or moral principle that you received exclusively from school that you did not get at home.

We do know she prefers wine and flowers over bad manners ...

That would be really weird, but at least 99.9% of homeschoolers do not have their teachers hitting on them either...(yeah I know that is sooooo wrong - I live a block away from the Mary K Laterno school - so ...gimme a break)....

Ignore artbyjody. He's confused. He actually IS Mary K LeTourneau. We just pretend we don't know. (g)

Homeschoolers have class reunions all the time. Usually at the holidays of Thanksgiveing, Christmas, etc... and at each other's birthdays. Of course, most other families do this as well but probably aren't as tightly knit as those homeschooled, given all the time spent away socializing.
