Since you are flexible on geography you might want to take a look at Great Lakes boats. There is a huge difference in a fresh water boat after 20 to 30 years. Plus they are typically only used from May to October.

Gary

How do you get the boat to the Ocean, do you have to take it by road or do these lakes go to the sea.??

You can go via the Erie canal to the Hudson river and then south to NYC. Or you can go out via the St. Lawrence River. Or you can go south, to the Mississippi River and take a couple of different routes out the southern way.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Like Sailing dog said, but the most common from around here is the Erie canal to New York. However, and especially if you bought one in Lake Michigan and since your destination is the Panama Canal then the Missisippi would make sense.

I am on Lake Huron, if you buy something up here and need local knowledge/crew give me a holler. I speak Oz.

You may find the pricing on boats in the mid-west more to your liking also. the economy in Michigan, unlike the rest of the country, is struggling apace with the domestic auto industry. In Michigan, right now, it's a buyer's market-cause nobody's buying anything!

G'day gary M

Hell mate, never thought about the Great Lakes area.
Always thought a lake was a body of water surrounded by land.
Now you blokes have gone and cut a ditch in the land so you can get to the sea!!!!

I might send you a PM and ask a lot of questions.

Anyway, I am glad this thread has taken off with info flying in.
For us in OZ it is all news.
Keep the suggestions coming fellas.
Could be having one hell of a barbie when the Aussies rock up to get a boat.

Jim.

You can see most of it using google books.

Snboard-

You do realize you're replying to a thread that's been dead for almost a year and a half. If he hasn't gotten the book by now...he probably isn't interested in getting it anymore. Please check dates before replying to threads. Also, highly recommend you read the post in my signature to help you get the most out of sailnet.

The fact that you have replied indicates that people do read older threads.

The original user who created the post is not the only one who benefits from sharing information. Anyone looking for information about the book will find their way to this thread and see my post.

Adding new information to old threads should never be discouraged. We are creating a knowledge base here.
