If you've got ad-blocking software on, that can often cause pages to load very slowly... Also, you should run task manager and see what processes are running, as Guesser stated, but check also to see if there are any processes running that you don't recognize... of course, if you're a relative novice, this is going to be less useful than if you have an idea of what should be happening.
Most new computers have a lot of junk software running on them, demo ware, etc... that isn't really necessary. I would personally recommend you ditch Windows Defender and McAfee, and load ZoneAlarm Security Suite instead.
