Every time I try to turn a wench, I get smacked. Whether I use a handle of not.

That's because you haven't got sufficient purchase. Sufficient purchase leads to mechanical advantage when turning a wench. Be careful with your knots, however: a half-hitch can become a dangerous rolling hitch with certain self-tailing wenches. |

This talk about wenches is confusing me now. I always thought that i was supposed to slide my bitter end into the wenches tail forming a tight seal... No?

(please post a photo of yourself, so I can see you. I am a very poor lonely man with no friends and family -except for sailingdog, he doesn't have friends and a life- and I need to see other human beings, so I can warm my stone cold aching heart thank you noble gentleman, sigh)
