The republican controlled congress' spending retraint and restructuring of welfare during the Clinton years and the fruits of Regan economics and foreign policy before him is what produced the surplus.
Clinton left office with the country in recession BEFORE Bush arrived on the scen.
It is not the war that has pushed us into deficits...it is the recession of Clinton + the impact of 9/11 + the stupid and uncontrolled growth in government spending encouraged by BOTH parties under Bush. (Perscription drugs and earmarks as examples)...and the failure to act to control social security and medicare costs and the price tag of illegal immigration and NAFTA. The only reason the economy remains reasonably healthy with deficits now declining is because of the tax cuts which spurred growth. The Dems will repeal those if the current congressional majority holds and then the US will be the front man in a global recession.
Repeat after me...the government is NOT responsible for the welfare of its citizens. Individual citizens are responsiblefor their own welfare and the governments role should be limited since it screws up everything it touches.

In answer to the original question, "Is war necessary?": I am reading a book about Halsey's Typhoon "Cobra" during WWII, wherein a pundit states, "War is God's way of teaching Americans Geography".

How true, I always thought Iraq should be called "New Texas".

Damn right war is necessary, how else can you legally kill all the bastiches that need killin'. Let's face it, every now and then, certain groups have to be wiped off the face of the earth. Nazis, KKK (although less successful), facists, apartheidists, etc, etc. I guess we could send them boxes of candy and hope their arteries clog, but a bullet is quiicker.

Krauthammer's latest thoughts sound reasonable to me. What am I missing?

Sailaway21, I guess my question is "why are we taking prisoners"? They decapitate theirs.

Ian,
While understanding the emotion, and it would certainly improve our troops effectiveness in the field, we do not because we are the product of western civilization. And, in this era of multi-culti relativism, that is one of the things that sets us apart. And it is one of the things that allows us to say, "Why, yes. I do believe our culture is superior to your's".

I think one of the casualties of this war is going to be the multi-culti foofaraw as well as 'our inability to make value judgements'. Both are dying a slow death on the spit of reality. And good riddance.
