This is shaping up to be quite a bill in the Senate. 100b$us in tax cuts, 700b$us bailout, no more MTM, raising FDIC limits and powers, ....

I don't know why they didn't just make it an even trillion for the bailout, a million $us limit for FDIC, 500b$us in tax cuts.

Hell, why not seize this historic opportunity and make it 10 kazillion in tax cuts, 5 gazilla in bailout, no more sadness or despair in the world, 500 years of intergalactic peace ...

Intergalactic peace... heavy sigh.
Speedways getting a break, and Oh my God, whats this? No more tax on childrens less than 5/16" arrow shafts... Now see, thats a deal killer for me. I mean really. Where did they think the money was going to come from to pay for all of this, the penny bush?

Wind
You think too small. They could have just declared that shite and shia muslims are now united and get along with both christians and jews - trumping your intergalactic peace request.

Has as much likelihood of making a difference.

As soon as they're done with this, Chairman Dodd will start on Re-regulating the American economy. Don't listen to the Senate debate without a barf bag.

sck5 is on a distinguished road
Those toxic assets may be worth more in the long run than they are now. Even now, only 3% of mortgages are in foreclosure. That means that 97% are still being paid. That means that 97% of MBS value is still there. Even if the default rate triples more than 90% of the value is still there.

The problem is they dont know which mortgages go with which MBS's. That is the rationale for having the govt. buy and hold the securities - That way the govt will eventually get almost all its money back while freeing the banks of their load of crappy assets. This isnt my preferred solution but it is what they were trying to do with the bailout as structured. It might even work.
