Why does reading this thread make me think of REM and ... It's the End of the World As We Know It?

Yupper, things is bad. In the late 70's and early 80's you needed 20% down on the hosue so you could maybe get a mortgage at 13 or 15% interest. We thought 6% was a dusty relic of the 60's never to be seen again. Of course, we also knew that 6% unemployment was reasonably considered to be full employment. How'd we get from there to here? We cut taxes and put the clamps on the money supply. You could research Reagan and Volcker, or you could just spend an evening with anything by Milton Friedman.

To a degree, of course. You are our main export market. But we run mostly balanced budgets, have a positive trade balance, have no sub-prime mortgage market to speak of and we are a petroleum, uranium and manufactures exporter. We also have a significantly higher personal savings rate, although the house price explosion has cut into that.
Haven't even gotten to all that wood, wheat and water yet.
It would hit manufacturing the hardest, and...no offense...I've been advising a strong diversification of our export market for years. It's too damn easy to ship stuff south, and so we don't sell as much as we should to Europe and Asia.
Frankly, been there, done that a few times now, every time an American corporation wants to close Canadian branch plants. Sure, it would hurt a great deal, but nothing like a major U.S. meltdown would clobber Mexico, for instance.
Nonetheless, I'd rather not test my theory.

I'm going to bow out of this thread as I think it's all been pretty much said. I will leave with a link that I recommend to all to read. http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/...une/index.html
I'm beginning to like Ben Stein even though he called me a stupid investor. He's the last pundit on the list.

Thanks for the link, Steve. It's worth reading just for Ben Stein's comments. Call me stupid as well.
