With everything that is coming down the pike about who knew what, when, maybe now the taxpayers will finally get up in arms and get rid of all the incumbents and put a stop to the insanity. It's past time that we got some independents in office. Maybe THEN we'll get some representatives who want to represent US and not their personal and party interests.

And what in the name of heaven was our President thinking when he went on the Jay Leno Show? My EU friends thought it was a scream. Someone needs to tell him that the election is over so he can stop campaigning... but then again, considering how things have been bungled so far, maybe he does need to start campaigning for 2012 now.

CD,
This is the worst I've seen and I have kids older than you. In the mid 70's we had an oil crunch and financial problems that caused our Gov't to initiate programs that would make us oil independent by 1985. Oops! That didn't happen. Things were a tad tight in the mid 80's when we had "black tuesday" I think it was called. We came out of it pretty quickly. We were cruising at the time so I don't have a memory of more oil shortages, but we must have as somewhere around then, our fearless leaders again initiated a program to make us oil independent by the year 2000. Oops again! We're still oil dependent and in another an oil crunch, but now the gov't is taking steps to make sure we stay that way. That makes sense!

I hadn't thought of it before, but it seems like our financial problems are preceded by oil problems. Does anyone have a clearer memory than I do about the time frames?

Bush failed to understand that popularity allows a president in power to pass the legislation he needs to make changes. Obama learned that lesson. I do not begrudge him doing that. Versus GWB that always seemed to shun the press in fear of a flying shoe!!

THe proofs in the pudding. Let's see what it tastes like in 12-24 months.

Loree,

An interesting question. How connected are the two? I have long debated the neccessity to become aggresive about getting off of foreign oil (a long, long debate here with me and Sway). If we were not dependent upon other people for our energy needs, imagine where we would be today?

And imagine if we had spent the X-Trillions of dollars on gettting energy dependent instead of the AIG's of the world. What would that look like now??? Of course, the Swiss banks, Hugo Chavez, and Saudi Princess would be hurting, but hey - ya gotta make some tough sacrifices!

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

It would appear that we are about the same age. I also have children about Brian's age.... and 4 grandchildren and counting (sigh).

The '70's were bad years. When I graduated college in the early '70's (Nixon) there weren't a lot of opportunities.

Very good question.

Of course, I always wonder where campaign money comes from, form what countries?. For a few pennies on the dollar a country can buy a president and some congressman that think in ways that will weaken the US and make us more dependent.

Then again, maybe that's not the case and it realy is simply the entitlement expetations that are selling us down the river.

This sounds very bad but I'm not knowledgeable enough to evaluate how accurate it is. It doesn't appear to be written by a gold bug either.

Someone once told me "never forget the heartland". From that phrase I get a lot of reassurance that crazy times will be replaced with more stable times.
