Kelpies, shelpies, and things that go bump in the night

Traditionally sailors don't learn to swim, as the sea will have a taste of you, it'll pull you under if the boat sinks.

Seagulls are the souls of departed sailors, so we don't harm them

We don't set sail on Friday, it's unlucky, because that's the day Christ was crucified.

Whistleing is not done, as you coud whistle up a wind.

If you rename the boat it should be on dry land, or if not, the old name of the boat should be somewhere displayed, that way the sea gods will think it's the same boat.

How many more can you add to this list?

You missed it by a week

.......the old name of the boat should be somewhere displayed, that way the sea gods will think it's the same boat.

I've heard ot the other way, that the old name must not be anywhere on the boat, otherwise the sea gods will be confused: Renaming

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Sailingdog: In sealore, a kelpie, shelpie, et al are horrible creatures that live in the sea. Some say a kelpie is a horse that lives in the water. In some cases, they drown sailors and spit their liver on the shore. They sometimes disguise themselves as seals. And then there are the Muckle men.

SUPERSTITIONS ya Fion!

(Fion son of Comnal, an enormous giant, who could place his feet on two mountains, and then stoop to drink from the valley below. known to cause grief to sailors by wading out to sea and disguising himself as an island)

Well, let’s see:

NEVER paint a dory green!

Never let the shadow of the masts fall on the wheel before all the salt’s wet!

It’s Albatross, not seagulls, but even so, it’d be detrimental to ones health to let the Pirate of Cape Ann catch ANYONE inflicting undue pain or injury on any animal!

And my favorite, When a bottle of rum comes aboard, the cap should be immediately removed and discarded.

And, rum should not be left to aire for very long as bad spirits may find it and make it unfit fer consumption!

Arrrgh!
