Vista

Those of you who use the Vista operating system, I would like to hear your opinions of Vista.

Vista's been released to the public, but by most accounts is still really beta ware. Buggy and missing a lot of driver support still. Typical new Microshaft OS release.

I agree with the dawg and would wait for the next iteration if I had a choice BUT if you do need it now, do not get the home basic...get the premium.
I find it to be another dumbing down off the operating system, further insulating and disabling the user from fixing problems. I'm not moving from XP until they drag me kicking and screaming!! (G)

Shoot, I wish I still had 2Kpro, instead of XP. Have no interest in Vista.

I have Vista pro. Yes a little buggy (tap to click etc) but I do like the features. It appears that they are incorporating some of the Apple features. Part deaux will no doubt be better.

The only Windows machines I have are running 2K Pro or 2K3 Server... my personal machines are Macs...

I'd also second Cam's suggestion of getting Premium. The home editions are effectively lobotomized IMHO.

I don't use MS-Win anything. Never have and, God willing, never will. But I have to maintain 'em at work. (Which only reenforces my desire to avoid anything MS at all costs.) So far we're avoiding Vista like the plague.

Nice scam, Microsoft has going: Just about the time the world's about got its current POS excuse for an operating system figured-out, they come out with a new version, loaded with a raft of gratuitious changes and more obfuscation, forcing people to pay MS and its fellow leaches again, for the same thing they already had--just w/different wrapping paper, introducing yet another set of incompatibilities with the rest of the world.

And people keep paying them for it.

Jim

Ebs-

Don't mistake not using it for never having used it. I had two machines setup with it during a good chunk of the beta period, and had two machines with it running to test out the OS for several months after it came out. One was equipped with the lobotomized home edition, the other had the full bells & whistles... It is more processor and memory intensive than 2K or XP, and requires a pretty hefty video card if you want the bells & whistles. However, it really isn't an improvement in many ways over the two older OSes and has a lot more bugs than either. Unless you're buying new hardware to run Vista with, don't bother getting it...that's my recommendation, and generally what I tell clients.

I agree wait on Vista unless there is some reason you have to get it. I think I might get a copy this fall. I am learning virus removal and such. I won't use it as the main operatin system, just for me to learn the ins and outs.

XP home gets updates from Microsoft for 2 years after the release of Vista.

XP Pro gets updates from Microsoft for 5 years.

My personal machines are also Macs. Been a mac user since 1990. Heck I even have a webserver running on my old 1999 model Mac. It has been running for years and the only time it has been restarted is when it has been moved around the office.
