Most trees used for such things as pulp and pressboard are actually farmed. These trees grow to maturity, for commercial purposes, in about seven years. They are land is harvested and then replanted.
The writer did make specific mention of the undesirability of deforestation and it can only be assumed he meant old growth forests.
DiCapprio is most likely the Hollywood flavor of the month and another example of Hollywood doing Good for all us hicks. The problem is that some people, see the stupid thread, take such movies as gospel. Remember, "The Morning After" or something-it was a bunch of hooey about nuclear winter. Few remember that it was widely discredited by science, many remember the ominous warnings.
The eco-weenies manage, more than most, to get right over the line with their palaver. Inevitably there are a few members with still functioning brains who decamp and proclaim their fallacies. They usually do not have the staying power of the writer. Michael Crichton has made a nice living decrying their excesses as well as the excesses of science flacks everywhere.
