You are right. THe dodger is ugly. It looks "lonely". It needs a bimini and the bimini needs a BBQ grill.

The reason is simple, it gives you more water line, thus more hull speed, for the same boat lenght...and that also helps upwind efficiency, but gives you more bouyancy in the front of the boat, and adds wet surface.

In my case, bouyancy is welcome, so the boat does not submarine in the waves. And wet surface not a problemn as I have a very wide transom, thus surfing becomes easy and the bow lifts off the water.

There are other resons such as rating, box rules etc...but the above is mainly it.

It also allows for more agressive angles from the sides of the hull to the bow...as you can see bellow, that allow a more rounded hull shape, reducing drag when heeled.
