I know Alex - Giulietta

Just to let you know. I have met your Giulietta man!!!

A couple weeks ago I met this guy from Portugal, he said he was a sailor.
We worked together for a week, him as "master", me as his humble side kick....

What a character, and one energetic, and funny SOB, too. He could do things in one hour that would’ve taken us a week to do.

Anyway, he got me thinking about sailing and sailboats. During our time together, I saw many (and I would like to emphasize many) photos of boats, his boat, Portugal and water, and more boats and more water, and more boats and his kids sailing, and did I mention water?

I was amazed by all that. I want to sail, too. He introduced me to sailnet, and I enjoy reading the stuff here, specially Alex’s crazy stuff. I am addicted to this place now.

Alex is a very nice man, and one that loves his family and his boat, whom he designed many parts. He invited me to Portugal, and offered his home, I am going soon.

Sorry Alex

Jack, the “Steak man” from Omaha

By the way..its "Huskers" not Huskies

Giu is a good guy... I've had a chance to meet him as well...and spoken with him on the phone many times. Aside from his somewhat obsessive addiction to photoshopping, he's okay in my book.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Actually, the way it works is that once you hang with Alex...anyone from Sailnet can visit you. I'll be there in my RV next week and you can put the steaks on the grill. Just tell your wife I'm yer cuzzin Eddie!!

Alex is indeed a good guy, and one I consider a friend. I've had the pleasure of having dinner with him several times, one of which was in my house.

On one occasion, Alex called me. I missed the call but had the number on my caller ID. I called the number and of course got the plant he was working at. You can imagine how large the facality is.
After the automated answering device picked up, I dialed "0" and got a receptionist.
I asked the receptionist, "Can you please page Alex from Portugal?"

Her response was something like, "You want me to do what?"

Anyway, she paged, "Alex from Portugal."
When he answered, there was nothing but laughter on the other end as well in the background from everybody in that office.

The first day I met him, I had been sent by my office to North Dakota to assist him, I see this guy walking down the Hotel corridor, talking with everyone along the way. I asked him if he had been at that the Hotel before, since he knew everyone, he said..nahh I’ve never seen them before, they’re Americans, they talk to everyone…

Now imagine this, he shows up with a sun tan, I thought he was one of those tanning salon weirdos. That was so funny, he had just been sailing for 3 or 4 weeks, but I had no idea, my boss said go meet the European guy, make him feel at home and do all he asks you to do, we’re paying a fortune to have him here, so I was imagining a blond Nordic fella, I’ve got a medium size tanned weirdo, with an Italian accent…actually more like Russian, wearing a mountain jacket. Its 65F outside and this guy is cold…

He mumbled something about snow and rain all the time in the US, and we left.

On the way to work, I had to fill the tank. He offered to buy the gas, I filled’er up and waited.

So I am outside, waiting and waiting and waiting, and no Alex, I thought, someone had kidnapped the Portagee, so I decided to go inside, and there he was, talking to his new friends, 2 guys from India and a small Mexican girl, their drinking coffee and laughing…

Man does he love to talk.

I have a lot more stories about him, but am saving them for when he returns.

So Jack, you can probably then explain to us Alex's contention that the Portugese invented steak cut beef and how CornHusker football was actually dreamed up in Lisbon, before the U of N was even founded? (g)

I can imagine him at the hotel, walking about much like a young Groucho Marx on the prowl.

Be wary of your phone, especially your business cell phone. He does a pretty good impression of an Arkansas hillbilly with a plumbing emergency, that he somehow thinks you can fix, and you CANNOT get him off the phone. The only thing worse is when he calls back later to let you know you wasted 10 minutes of your life talking to one of his alter-egos.

I'm presuming you're not one of the guy's who got him drunk in So. Indiana? We're still sorting that one out.

In any event, as said above, if you're a friend of Alex's you're a friend of our's. And when you think about it, there aren't all that many people one would regard that way. Don't forget to look up the directions for your own Portagee bobble-head doll, I think USpirate had 'em last.

I considered moving this thread to off topic so I could do a proper Photoshop job on Giu, then decided against it (though I have a few suprises in mind for when he returns).

So, Jack, he showed you a pic of his boat, eh? Look something like this??

PS Jack. Welcome aboard.
