I don't hate people..not normally..but....

Is it just me or do you guys also get pretty annoyed by the guys that come here and ask crap like if we're in the room with them, or know the logs they sail??

Questions like:

Hi, I have a boat, and need a new boom, anyone knows what it measures?

Hi, my name is Plonker, I have a boat, and need sails do you have an anchor?

Hi, I'm thinking about buying a boat in 34 years, I like the Valiant from1234, but saw a PS from 1567, with slaves still inside...do you like the Catalina?

Is it just me??? what shall one do in this case???

Its like talking to the idiot neighbour no one likes, but you have to be nice otherwise he will piss in your flowers, know what I mean??

Rant away, dear Sailneters, rant away....

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who don't seem to realize that giving more information about a situation or problem generally gets far better results than just the bare minimum.

They're the same people who go to the tire store, driving their wife's Honda Accord, and say "I need new tires... how much are they going cost?" without telling the person that they want a set of all-terrain P275R75 16 tires for a Ford Expedition. And then they get annoyed when the quote is way off base.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I'm with you. In my humble opinion homo sapiens is a much overated species. I've often wondered , if we are created in god's image, how flawed is that sucker ?

Alex,

Yes , I agree with you in principle. Especially the " Hi, I have a boat, and need a new boom, anyone know what it measures?" questions but you do need to cut the newcomers a bit of slack especially the "I want to sail around the world, which boat ?" questioners. To my mind they are at the beginning of their dream. To dump on them for their ignorance is unfair and spiteful, generically speaking that is, I do not mean you personally are spiteful or unfair.

Those of us who did not grow up sailing , and I'm one of them, had to start somewhere. Shite, when I first got the sailing bug I wanted to go out and build a 65' timber ketch. Stupid idea, yes, but while I was dissuaded from going down that path it was done in a sympathetic manner that didn't discourage me from my dream and 30 years later I'm still sailing, still dreaming and wouldn't have it any other way.

On the other hand, if we dump on every newbie, convince the suckers to find another hobby, make it plain that if the cyclones don't get you then the pirates must, uphold the case for cruising under sail being nothing more than dysentry but wet and cold, we might just end up with less crowding of our favourite anchorages.

When spouse gets this way, I ask, are you a BMW or a WMB today?!?!?!?!?!?!

I'll let you figure out the meanings............

Some folks do not know how to ask a question such that they get specific results! Pure plain and simple!
