"When he hit the buoy the impact of it threw him into the water and, unfortunately, he had missed one of the big rules, which is you don't go to sea by yourself," Commander Wheeler said.

The quote is out of context. What he actually said was ...."you don't go to sea by yourself when drunk, naked and coated with valeline (without a lifeline)". Damn the press.
To me that guy is a good sailor...he goes on a boat, he falls overboard, and the boat keeps going without weatherhelm for 5 hours...I want that guy as my sail trimmer...NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can see it now... Giu has him trim the sails then pitches the poor bastage overboard...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

You had me going for a moment there. Then I realised that there is no mention of him being pissed as a newt. Not guilty your honour !!
He was one lucky SOB. If I'm not mistaken Darwin harbour (I've only ever been there once and that was twenty years ago) is riddled with salt water crocs.

Between the spiders, snakes, sharks, and octipi, is there any place outdoors in Oz that is safe?

You forgot the crocs... the sharks are saltwater only...the crocs do both.

Well, no, there isn't really but I'm afraid it's not limited to outdoors.
Sings "there was a redback on the toilet seat when I went in last night".
Oh yes and you forgot the box jelly fish.
SD - Freshwater crocs in Oz won't eat ya. It's only the salts that are a problem.
TS - The stingray was only doing the world a favour.
BTW "Steve Irwin wouldn't have died had he been wearing sunscreen - it would've protected him from the harmful rays.

I had it figured for our wombat as well-broke out of the captive wombat breeding program or some such. I suspect the indigenous creatures ar what enabled him to scale the sides of the buoy-highly motivated and all that. Effin' Naval officer thinks he's a comedian too!
