Ladies and Gentleman - John Cale

Wombat loves his music. Like my politics my taste is not evryone's cup of tea. Something of a broad canvas from Hank Williams to Genesis via The Saints and Rachmaninov. Right up at the top of the pryamid is John Cale. He of Velvet underground fame.

Last evening me and the Ms W had the pleasure of bopping through a couple of hours of the man in concert. Feck he is good. Not in orchestral mode, it was with a straight rock band but Ah Me twere a loovely thing to see. From stuff that was verging on white noise to the sublime, alas without the extra fiddles.

Big VU fan here too. Coincendently i just changed my signature yesterday to a Lou Reed quote. Anyway... i've never had the opportunity to see any incarnation or solo act of the Velvet Underground but maybe i'll get lucky at some point. You must have caught the Tivoli show last night according to the tour schedule. What is that place like? I'm very envious!!!

It's the 9th today on this side of the dateline.

We saw him at the Enmore in Sydney. I don't know the Tivoli in Brisbane. Enmore is not a bad venue for a smallish concert. Dance floor down the front with seating behind but unobstructed. My kind of venue. Also allows alcohol in the auditorium in glasses. Hate the big places, refuse to go anywhere near the Entertainment Centre and their effing security nazis. Metro is another quite good small Sydney venue. For me these days, it's that or the pub. My days of stadiums are done and dusted.

John Cale put out an album called "Sabotage Live" around 1980, when I was 19. I saw him play in a 120 seat bar called "The Edge" here in Toronto. Still remember it clearly.

Did he cover Leonard Cohen?

And if you like John Cale, you should try to catch Richard Thompson.

Right.... i forgot you guys live in the future! That sounds simular to a place in Atlanta called The Tabernacle. It was an old baptist church at one point years ago but it's now a concert venue.... smallish but still big. We saw Bauhaus there and i am a HUGE fan of that band. We went to the Coachella Festival (40K+ people, two days) in California just to see them a couple years ago. It was a multistage, in the middle of the desert type show. It is the last show like that i will go to... just too many people to ever get comfortable. That, and i'm getting older and don't feel the need to put myself through that kind of torture just to see a show. BUT... it was one hell of a show and i will never forget it. Only for Bauhaus would i do that again. We spent 10 days in CA though visiting LA, SF and Sonoma/Napa Valley... we love the vino.

Off topic but..... A few pics i took from the Bauhaus show in Atlanta. My last name is on these pics so i hope i don't get psycho killers on my doorstep now.

I bought Paris 1919 when it was first released, early seventies. Had not got into VU before that and didn't even know he was in the band until then.

Could you ask for much more than Cale covering Cohen ? I think not. Unless it's Cale, Richard Thompson and Shawn Colvin covering Heartbreak Hotel.

Thompson is yet another bloody genius. Only motor bike I've ever really wanted was a ?????

BTW - V, you're a Canadian, ever heard of Shawn Phillips ?

Joel - I've never really listened to Bauhaus. I guess you are saying I should have.

Depends... maybe. They are the pioneers of the goth sound and were the first band to be labelled as such... this was in 1979. Not the kinda crap that is considered goth these days. They are a HIGHLY influencial band. here's a little blurb that does a good job of summing them up:

"Bauhaus combined a number of influences including punk music, glam rock, Krautrock, and even funk and dub to create a gloomy, but passionate sound which appealed to many fans left uninspired by the New Wave that arose in the wake of punk's collapse. Their sound proved influential, inspiring or bringing attention to a whole wave of post-punk groups delving in the intense, gloomy style that would eventually come to be known as gothic rock. Its crucial elements were the innovative guitar playing of Daniel Ash and the dub-influenced bass of David J."

Here is live footage from 1998 which also includes older clips from the past when they were younger. I'll stop hijacking the thread now... sorry! (hey... i'm a musician... i can't help but talk about my top 3 influences. I may have to start another thread on it so we can talk about the others.)
