The American job hunt

Shamelessly posted from another forum...

Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock (MADE IN JAPAN) for 6am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor (MADE IN HONG KONG). He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans (MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio (MADE IN INDIA) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) filled it with GAS from (Saudi Arabia) and continued his search for a good paying AMERICAN JOB. At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day checking his Computer (Made In Malaysia)(with tech support in INDIA ), Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE!) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA ), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in.. AMERICA .....

Hard to add to that. I'm home now sipping on some Carribbean rum figuring out what I'm going to do in the near future when the rest of the semiconductor industry moves to India, China, and Vietnam. Our kids are heading to college soon to learn a trade in the service industry because that's all that will be left for them. A pharmicist and a teacher. I hope they can make as good a life as their parents have.

Now that's looking at the bright side Simon. I see your point. Hope it's true.

Looks to me that the American dream has come back down to earth.
Then again same thing happening in Europe, with the difference that now the people from 1/2 the (ex)eastern block countries can legally work here.

But look at the bright side, at least you're driving a quality German car!! mine is American!!

...actually, most of the American cars are made of parts from other countries as well...Mexican electronics, German fuel injection, etc....

But toyota, honda, and even mercedes assemble many of their cars in the USA.
The fact is that low skill/high paying jobs are dissapearing fast all around the globe. China, not the USA leads the world in manufacturing job losses. Why? They are automating just like everybody else.
Silicon valley & Redmond Washington are importing jobs left & right because they can't find enough QUALIFIED workers. When jesse jackson took his circus to silicon valley to try & extort money under the pretense of looking for jobs, one of the CEOs said in public that he would hire every single QUALIFIED candidate jackson would bring him. jesse shut up and moved on to easier targets.

We are moving to a two class society...educated & uneducated. We keep throwing more & more money at our school systems and we keep getting worse and worse results. There's the problem.

Unfortunately, many school systems lowered their standards so "you know who" could pass...therefore no student left behind...or with an education, for that matter..!!

Xort...you raise good points. What is troubling to me is that even in the unlikely event that someone could wave a magic wand and fix all the schools, there are human differences in intelligence and capabilities. In the old days...the guys who could not hack it at the academic stuff could find good paying jobs getting their hands dirty and still build a good life for themselves and their families. Much tougher today...so much stuff is throwaway & good paying service sector jobs are tough to find for those without an strong educational background.
