It's not 'free'. You pay for it, or somebody, pays for it one way or another.

SC needs to have a tea party. Maybe some of our New England friends here can give them rebs a lesson, er another lesson!!!

I wonder how long it will take before threads like this, that are popping up all over the internet, will be brought to the attention of the jerks, er the powers at be.

On the Great Loop list, some folks were posting to stay away from a certain town on the Erie canal because of crime. The story made the local paper and pretty darn quick the mayor had the police chief on the carpet.

Xort...off course its not for free...my joke with you guys was that at least we pay and get something in return...maybe less that what we pay for...

But I have spoken with some friends in the US, and for what you guys pay...you should be getting at least some respect...you don't even get that from your officials...

Free , free , free eveybody wants a free . Free to let other people decide how you (they) spend your money . Then pretty soon its not just your money its your time , soon to be followed by your speech . Then your thoughts .

Im with Xort time for a tea party , then we can get back to freedom the way the entire world sees it " American style" . The only country that bit back against tyrany and formed the only free society on the planet.

Yes we have our problems and no we have not gotten all the kinks out yet but one thing we have in common , something the entire world looks at with
awe , is our freedom .

Giu Im glad you took advantage of the social programs your nation afforded you , you have every right to proclaim the benefits of a wellfare state . It worked to your advantage . Good for you .

There are no free lunches in America but there is freedom to make anything you want for lunch here . Even if it is McDonalds.

Pardon my rant , I just get tired of listening to people gloat about the wonders of their governments over the U.S.A. and ask myself why the entire globe is trying to get here . Some even risking their lives to do so .

If you think all that stuff was free--that proves the value of your free education was somewhat lacking. Sorry old chap, you may not have paid at the counter when you got all those things--but I'd bet they were all funded by programs that your taxes are paying for, right now. Or at least, programs that SOMEone's taxes are supposed to be paying for.

The SC program may be nasty and hostile and all sorts of things but it doesn't surprise me in the least. In MOST of the US, if you have a motor vehicle (including an auxiliary motor vessel, such as a sailboat with a permanently installed engine) in any state for more than 30 days, the state motor vehicle codes require you to REGISTER THE VEHICLE IN THAT STATE.

Yes, that means if you bring your car down to visit Granny and stay for five weeks, technically you've got to get it out of state sometime in the there, or change the registration (and insurance) on it. One of the many widely found laws, equally widely ignored when folks are "just visiting" and they still maintain their home address.

It's not a federal issue, each state has the right to do this.

Oh they are not paying for it right now... they just run up huge deficits every year to be paid by future generations.
I can tell you Guil, there is no way you will pay for that lot with 50% taxes.

Let me quote you from this...(I will give you the source of it if you wish, it's from eubusiness.com).

Quote...

Portugal slashes budget deficit
11 October 2007, 21:37 CET
(LISBON) - Portugal will have slashed its budget deficit to three percent of output this year from six percent thanks to two years of drastic belt-tightening, Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates said Thursday.

"Portugal will put its public finances in order one year ahead of schedule. In two years, we passed from six to three percent," Socrates said.

If it achieves in cutting the deficit to three percent this year, euro zone member Portugal will have managed to lower the shortfall to within the limit of three percent set out in European rules.

"We will no longer belong to the list of countries with excessive deficits and that is big news for the Portugese economy," Socrates said.

Socrates's leftwing government has applied two years of shock therapy to the Portuguese economy including drastic and unpopular reforms of the civil service and an increase in the retirement age to 65. It also hiked taxes across the board including value-added tax (VAT) and fuel duties.

In 2008 it is aiming for a budget deficit of 2.4 percent in 2008. The government also aims to cut public debt as a proportion of output to 64.4 percent this year from 64.8 percent in 2006.

"The government will maintain a hard line and budgetary discipline, essential factors for the future of the country, but the 2008 budget will also focus on growth (and) ... an increase in public spending," Socrates said.

..unquote.

So public debt is at 64% as a fraction of output.

...and likely to worsen, by the time they have paid all those things you list. Guil, Europeans are absolutely nuts for doing this. They promiise the earth (tomorrow) if you vote for them, then they let your children pay for it.

So the Americans get less than you do?

I wonder why?
