"Americano"

This is what in Spain generally describes a "BIG BLACK COFFEE".

Now where for Pete's sake did they come up with that name - of course nobody has been able to tell me.
Quite obvious it didn't originate in the Columbus days, and since then I think there has been no Spaniard of importance to return from the US.
Now there was Eisenhower, he was over here, but he don't qualifies either I guess.

So where did "Americano" come from? Any suggestions ?

Yes...I'll explain to you.

We also call it the Americano in Portugal.

Here it goes.

As you know we only drink Expresso in Southern Europe, the Americano is the large mug of black coffee you Americans drink all day long in your offices at work.

Its a large quantity of weaker coffee. And because only you guys drink that much quantity of coffee in a mug that big, its called the Cafe á la Americano, or Americano for short.

Americano is a large mug with less strong coffe. Its the coffe you drink in the US, normally from Colombia.

We drink less quantity but stronger coffe, like the double shots you can get at Starbucks, except Starbucks coffee really tatses like ****....

Thx Giu, but don't put me in the same boat as them - I'm all European.

So you are saying that just because it's "big" and "weak" it's American!
Woo man that sucks, well at least part of it.

Giu, what coffee beans do you have in Portugal? What is really good there, top of the line? Can I get it in the US? There is nothing like a good cup of coffee.

For the record..I was not calling Americans big and weak.

I was refering to the coffee. Our coffee is smaller quantity and strong flavour, the American coffee is a larger quantity in a big mug , but the coffee concentration is lower.

Man..I know some idiot is going to give me bad reps for this one too

Well, yeah... Kind of. Alex left an important bit out. What most Americans drink is drip coffee that has about the strength of a cafe Americano - or less. A cafe Americano made properly is made from espresso diluted with hot water, it's not drip coffee. And yes: It makes a difference in the taste. Quite a big difference, strength aside.

Jim

Absolutely right...the best of the best of the best...

One condition I imposed to Val was:

Bring me some Blue mountain...

I drank every once of it, ALONE...I did not share with any one....

I ran out a few weeks ago....
