Stu,
Claim all you wish about not being PC. Judging by your posts so far you epitomize PC.
Reasonable men can and do differ on global warming, and most acknowledge that there is nothing like a "knock-out" blow in either's arsenal. You miss any opportunity of claiming membership in the reasonable crowd by failing to even acknowledge that there are learned climatologists who feel man is not the primary cause of global warming or that the evidence he is, is incomplete.
Your next flight of fancy involves the claim of being non-political. Which claim flies in the face of virtually every post you've made, not to mention the threads you've elected to post in. You are intensely political while attempting to claim to be above the fray within the ivory tower. Did you think that the sailing bumpkins of sailnet (sorry, CD) were so naive as to not realize that the academe is without doubt the most political segment of society, predominantly leftist, and that your condescending "I'm just a big issues man" act wouldn't be called out for the bilge water it is?
And while it appears you're not housed in the poli-sci wing, or God help us if you are, the foundation of American government is based upon the principle of federalism which makes the citizen and his state and local government the most important governments within his normal range of activities. But you are above the fray that decides such minutia as how a community and it's resources will be used and developed. Any local epidemic of dangerous illicit drug use by the teen population is hardly your concern. Likewise, the quality of education your neighbors kids receive is none of your concern. Neither the sequestering of land for green space or the development of that land are matters of concern to you. Similarly the usurption of state and local powers by the federal government is beneath you. After all, you've got a mission. You're busy educating the world on the dangers of cow farts. And one's time is limited, isn't it?
Probably the only lasting interest found in your posts will be the degree to which you go to obscure your basic orthodoxy. I would not go so far as to say that your mind is closed, merely totalitarian. Your best example of this is your denigration of local issues, as well as the greater societal issues, which for you are a settled matter or trivial. Given the basic fact that the only impact on this world that 99% of us will have is within our local community, that attitude smacks of either elitist thinking or just plain arrogant self-centeredness. I would foresee many a happily cast vote for Hillary by you as you seem to share that rarely seen arrogance, outside of Brussels, that believes in the election of our betters so as to dictate policy to the great unwashed. I believe Hillary to be a closet totalitarian, and you seem to evince the same symptoms. May God save us from both of your enlightened thinkings.

Sorry sailaway, but you're not qualified to have a meaningful (in that laymen should care what you think) opinion of your own concerning the science of GW (neither am I). On that subject, I'm simply repeating what the climate science community is publishing. You're entirely qualified to have a political position on it. I'm unclear on how that is "PC", except that you seem to not like PC, not like me, and so conflate the two in some wierd twist of logic.
Similarly, I'm presumably now a "leftist" in your mind. I guess you don't like leftists, don't like me, therefore... all cows are black at night?
I'm posting here in this thread because I'm amusing myself. That's all. No nefarious agenda I'm aware of.
Whether Hill or Rudy is elected will not effect me in any meaningful way, and I don't care for either one (in fact, I think they're both idiots). Why is that so hard for you to wrap your brain around? And the fact that I don't care much about local issues doesn't mean that I think they're unimportant, just that I'm uninterested in accumulating the knowledge required to make what I think are informed decisions. For now, I'm content to leave that to others. Most people actually feel this way, they just aren't explicit about stating it. Rant on about how that makes me evil or whatever.
Am I elitist and totalitarian in a sense? Yeah. I've been clear that I prefer republic to democracy, which I see as little more than 'mob rule'. I prefer to elect some specialist to 'handle' the finances of the library, than to hold a town meeting over every issue. My time is better spent working on problems I'm suited to work on. Economics 101.

GOOD God!
I'm actually agreeing with Sailaway on an off topic subject.
The sky is falling (no wait that's a different thread
Stu - Since all you ever really do is spout opinions and demand published meta studies - show me the meta study that proves your head is really not up your a$$.
You fill your commentary with generalizations while demanding others do your research for you and present you with the facts to support thier opinions. HUH?
I've got a better idea, if global warming concerns you help us out, turn off your computer.
And now back to your regular programing...

Although I risk violating the old "never get into a mud wrestling contest with a pig.." rule, I find it hard to hold my tongue.
Based on the amount of time Stu's got on his hands to make snarky comments here on SailNet, the econmomy must be doing great (either that, or nobody's interested in Stu's opinions on that topic as well...)

Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory to keep their imaginations fired up on these long, cold, winter nights. I'm not suggesting that it's true, of course, but WHAT IF the whole global warming theory was cooked up in the inner sanctums of General Electric, or some similar company, that could make untold billions of dollars if they could just figure out a way to break down the public resistance to the construction of hundreds of new nuclear power generating stations? WHAT IF the evil, conniving Al Gore owned large blocks of stock in GE, and conceived the plan to scare the crap out of everyone by making them think Mother Earth is heating up, and the only way we can save it is by embarking upon a massive program to replace coal-fired generating stations with nuclear reactors? WHAT IF StuMyers is really a "stooge" on the payroll of GE, sent here to convince us poor but proud, humble, God-fearing (for the most part) sailors of the reality of the danger of Global Warming, and WHAT IF GE hired hundreds of other StuMyers' ( or, better yet, let's say they cloned StuMyers) and assigned sinister legions of their minions to monitor hundreds of chatsites like ours, to convince us of the danger, and to violate our constitutional rights by reporting our personal and private webchats to their BIG Boss...Howard Dean (who is widely known to be, well..er...unstable and prone to fits of screaming). "Boss" Dean spirits away the non-believers to a remote island stronghold in the Caribbean...someplace where nobody ever goes, like Cuba. I think I'm starting to see a low-budget movie here, complete with computer-generated tidal waves and a collapsing Empire State Building.

Yeah, it sounds preposterous, but if you give the conspiracy theorists another day to pass it around the internet, Katie Couric will be reporting it breathlessly on the 6:30 news! I wonder how many people are checking the internet RIGHT NOW to see if algore really owns GE stock. When you think about it, it really would be a shame if the human race became extinct due to Global Warming. We humans can be so entertaining!
