"Gentry Liberals"

How this guy ever got published in the LA Times is beyond me. While he is no conservative of any stripe, he is audacious enough to say that the Dems liberal elites care little for the working man base of the party. And it does sound like he's been reading our global warming thread as well. I probably don't agree with much of what he misses in the Democratic party but I can certainly see his concern. If what he says is correct, Reagan will not be the last to say, "I didn't leave the Democratic party, it left me".

I agree with a lot of what Kotkin say's but I also believe both parties have left most of us. I'm very pissed off at the Republican Party right now . . . but I have nowhere else to go. I defected a few years back to the Libertarian party but then they turned into a bunch of wacko's. My immediate concern is to defend my life via the War on Terrorism. After that where do I go? I'm in one of those industries that is closing the doors and moving to Asia as fast as possible so it can compete with the rest of the world. I blame Liberals for creating the exodus of manufacturing due to regulations and the Conservatives for not standing up to it. The article is pointing out the change in the Democratic Party but I think the Republican Party has done basically the same thing.

Gentry Liberals . . . interesting.

Look to the NY dems and their favoring of the bankers & wall street. Go where the money is. Unions don't have the deep pockets they used to, so f-em.

This is not a new complaint.

When Nixon quit back in 1952; he made comment that Pat did not have "democratic Fur Coat" (paraphrase) ; but a good honest "Republican Cloth Coat."

Quote:
Well, that's about it. That's what we have and that's what we owe. It isn't very much but Pat and I have the satisfaction that every dime that we've got is honestly ours. I should say this—that Pat doesn't have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat. And I always tell her that she'd look good in anything.

Sway, I would like to make two comments if I may. The first is that the democrats have been the party of the fringe for some time now and are no closer to bridging the gap then they were when they lost congress back in 94. You can not reconcile the wants of the gay and transsexual lobbies with the Black American lobbies. Nor can you reconcile the militant feminist with the working mothers. The continued determination of the Democrat party to get the endorsement of all the different minorities will continue to haunt it for years to come. They didn't win back the congress. The Republicans lost it. This was as simple as the old saying " power corrupts". Which is exactly what happened. They got one party control and didn't have to compete with an opposing ideology. Consequently, they lost they're morals on spending and reducing the federal governments intrusion in to state and local affairs. Now they're paying the price. This doesn't represent a major shift on the part of the Democrat party. It's still going after the minority, fringe and feel gooders. It will continue to pay for this.

My second point is of a more personal nature. You spend a lot of time searching the web for political stories that agree with your sensibilities. I think you should get out more. Go have dinner with the misses. Catch a movie or two. Politics have been going on since the cavemen. It will still be there for your amusement after dinner.

Actually Dan, one need only go to the Drudge Report to have access to all sides of the media, from the Nation to National Review, everything in between and a few on the outside of both. While Drudge may be on the right, he does run an "equal opportunity" portal.

Your assessment though is quite well founded. Since '72 the Dems have been leaning further and further to the fringe (some might say since '68).

Currently enroute to Miami from Fort Pierce

I second that on Drudge PB.

I have a hot key to take me right to it several times a day. Perspective is funny sometimes isn't it? I look at Drudge as slanting left. It's a really good source of media. Very extensive list of links.

danjarch,
Funny you should mention...just had dinner out with the wife tonight before the start of the game. Usually, the last thing she say's before she feeds me dinner is, "C'mon, get in the car". She didn't end up with the warm cuddly feeling she might have hoped for as Baltimore insisted on making a real game of it. She was toes up by half-time and I was looking for a ref's review long enough to put on a pot of coffee. It was some game!

You should be glad i rarely go to the movies anymore. How much typing do you think I'd do after viewing some of the current stuff out there, like "Redacted"? I'm too dutch to waste my money on what passes for serious film out of Hollywood these days and the more entertaining stuff, like "8 Below" (which I enjoyed) of any quality is too rare. The unfortunate result of this is that I have virtually the entire dialogues of Patton and Animal House commited to memory. My wife has lost interest in counting how many times i can watch either. I'm sure some shrink could write a nice PhD dissertation on how that fact informs my political outlook. (g)

I'll concede the point about the movies. I agree with you on the potential for long and verbose posts about the state of modern movie scripts.
