Christmas Eve Dinner

We have been asked to bring an appetizer to our family Christmas Eve Dinner, serving 12 approximately, I would appreciate some suggestions / recipes from my friends here, especially those not from New England who could suggest 'something different'.

There is a 'battle of appetizers' with a few other people, help me with this one.

Hey, Portagee, anything from your side of the world? Remember, I'm one of the few who voted for you!

The Portagee would recommend anything French...like snails! (g)

Since it is Christmas...how about a fondue for dipping?

What is the main meal going to be... that would help narrow down what wouldn't work and what would.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Ok, thanks for the replies, here is an update, the crackers, brie, assorted cheeses, duck and bluefish pate' etc. platter is taken, they bring it every year; this is the first year we were asked to bring the appetizer, usually I just bring the champagne for the toast. For thanksgiving, we make the cheesecake with strawberries in a port wine sauce, I wish we would have been asked for that; I do not have much experience with appetizers.

I understand we are having pork roast, although I do not have the details of the meal and the wine being served. It can be a hot or cold appetizer.

My old stand-by is scallops wrapped in bacon, but I want something different.

old rule of thumb for wine. red meat, red wine. white meat, fish, and foul white wine. Most people say don't go by that.

A smoked fish assortment with some sushi rolls for color would be different. then you can make a video of the guests going around saying "I don't eat raw fish!" they you have the perfect opportunity to say .. "it's always about you isn't it? don't you know smoked from raw???"
