If someone is threatening to sink or blow up the ship I am on, and they continue to approach in an aggressive manner.... and I'm armed... I'm gonna defend myself... since I have no reason to think that they're bluffing. This is especially true if the people in question are Islamic fundamentalists.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

They are afraid of you, because you made it clear they would be sunk.

You did not make the tame mistakes the British made last Easter and were paraded like a bunch of stuffed toys on Iranian TV.

Well done Americans.

The real threat is from fast-moving motor torpedo boats. A torpedo makes an awful mess. Keep them at arm's length, and forcefully.

Rockter.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said that its high-speed boats never threatened the U.S. vessels during the encounter, insisting it only asked them to identify themselves, then let them continue into the Gulf...
Maybe these will help...

Dihydro,
I'm starting to like you. I believe in the Marine Corp saying, Shoot first ask questions later.

it would be gratifying in the short run to stick it to them but unfortunately we have a whole lot of our guys transiting that piece of water every day. Take a look at the map - dont you think they are better off the longer nobody is shooting at them? I am not saying dont sink them if they are really going to try something - just that if we can avoid a real conflict ALL of our guys are better off, including all the ones further up the gulf.

Rockter has it exactly right. They know we don't bluff and are not hesitant to fire. I feel safer when my countries enemies feel that way.

Here is San Diego our naval fleet is surrounded by very fast, very well armed patrol boats, you get within 200 yrds of one passing though the bay and those very fast, very well armed little boats make their presents known, get within 200 yrds of one anchored and you could end up on a plate at Sushi Roku's

Why aren't we doing the samething in the Gulf ??? and/or stitching a few across they path at the very least

I do agree with you i was an good thing that it didn't come to gun play this time. I do believe that that they will continue to harass our ships until they provoke an incident. When they do get their aress blow out of the water they reward is 72 virgins. If and when it happens our navy will probably be ridiculed by the press and have to defend itself against the public opinion of why did we have to fire and create an International incident. All in all i hope it does not come to that.

I didn't have an opinion until I heard the almost comical radio exchange between the Iranian nutters and the U.S. Navy vessels: "We will explode you!" said in a scary baritone...what crap.

I think the Americans showed real professionalism and restraint, particularly given incidents such as the Cole. I am not surprised they held lethal fire (surely anyone posted in that region understands "the optics" of destroyers putting 500 rounds into a speedboat), but I am surprised that they didn't go for "a shot across the bow" or even send a mini-keg-sized flare or other pyrotechnic in the general direction of these idiots.

Personally, I would instruct the deck crew to learn "your little putt-putts are sad and your penises are broken" in street Farsi. That would sound interesting over the VHF.
