insurance - hauling??? - without hull survey???

Hi,
I have a big problem - hopefully somebody can help me!

I have a home-made sailboat (45f), built in 1989. I never had insurance for my boat and a survey was never done.

Now I want to haul my boat and I need liability insurance. No marina will haul me out without any liability insurance. (Years ago I could haul my boat without any insurance)

All insurance companies I called so far won't give me insurance without a survey (including the hull). The problem is that the boat must be haul to get the survey the insurance-companies are asking for.
Without insurance I can't get haul-out and I can't get haul-out because I need insurance for this.

Does anybody know an insurance company that will give me liability insurance without a survey including the hull?

I really appreciate any answer!!!

Thanks

heidi

I assume you have only spoken with private marinas with Travel-lifts - boatowner insurance is normally required with this option. You did not state how large your boat is, but have you considered calling a bonded boat hauler with a rig large enough to haul out at a deep water public boat ramp?

Based upon direct experience with a prior boat (years ago), some over-the-road, boat hauler's insurance carriers will assume liability. They could lift the boat out long enough for the out-of-water portion of the survey.

Have you asked the insurance company about liability only insurance? They may not require a survey for that, and it may satisfy the marina's requirements.

Thanks!
It's a 45f Ketch.
I have to work on the hull - therefore I want to haul it.
I want to work on the boat by myself and there are not many marinas left, where you can do this (here in Florida).

I want to haul the boat not in my hometown (Fort Lauderdale) because it's too expensive here. (I found a marina in Fort Pierce where I could work on the boat by myself.)

If I would have to haul the boat here in Fort Lauderdale it would be very expensive. I also would have to pay twice for hauling (here and at the other marina).
Therefore I'm looking for a way to get liability insurance without getting a haul out here. (The marina in Fort Pierce won't haul me without a liability insurance)

Would be great if you could give me some advise.

Thanks a lot!

I'm sorry. I didn't mention that I only want to get liability insurance. For me it doesn't make any sense that I need a hull-survey for getting liability insurance - but all insurance companies I called so far are requiring a full survey (including hull) even for a liability insurance.

Would be great if could help me!

Thanks

I forgot to say:
Some Marinas would haul my boat only for a survey. These marinas (in Fort Lauderdale) are too expensive for me to stay there for working on the boat. (I guess I have to work on the boat for at least 1 month.) I found a cheaper marina in Fort Pierce where I also could work on the boat by myself. This marina won't haul the boat without insurance.

The problem with this solution: I would have to pay twice: 1. hauling for getting the survey done, 2. the marina where I would stay for one month.

Would be much better if I could get a liability insurance without a survey including the hull.

maybe somebody knows an insurance company for this!

Thanks!!!!

Don't know anyone to recommend down in FL heidi - sorry. But at each season's end up here in RI, I hired a local boat hauler to haul my old boat out at a boat ramp, and then deliver a few miles to my back yard. This was cheaper than marina storage rates and enabled taking time to do my own work.

Of course, a 45 ft ketch, unstepping two masts and rigging fees, may not make this such a good decision.

Call an insurance broker and specify that you want to obtain an umbrella liability policy which would indemnify you (as opposed to a boat) and discuss with the broker the categories of exclusions you want addressed such as workers compensation claims, personal liability and consequential property damage, all of which should more than address any marina's concerns.

It is you, not the boat, which bears laibility in the event of an accident so be specific in both what the marina wants and what you need to address that concern

Thank you very much for the answer! I will call the marina and ask them if this kind of insurance would be fine with them.

Thanks again!

Indeed - the boat is a little bit too big for most back yards...

Thanks for your answer anyway!
