The situation isn't much different in the US. Deli counter scales no longer show ounces--or kilos. They show "pounds, decimal" and you can buy .500 pounds, or .680 pounds, but heaven help you if you want say, ten ounces of something. And, it is illegal to sell things by the piece in some states. One butcher here used to sell the pig's head--till he got ticketed for selling it by the piece not the pound.
You can't buy a pint or a quart of potato salad or other loose goods anymore, either. The container is still half/pint/quart sized, but the deli guys don't know that, they have to charge by weight and if you ask for a pint container, they ask "Did you say pound?"
Progress. And minimum wage labor. Doesn't matter if it is metric or not, it is still idiocy compounded by petty facists who never learned how to play well with others.
