USCG Boat Coxswains

I've been out in breaking waves, but on a bit bigger boat---82' USCGC Point Countess in 18-20' seas off Orford Reef off the Oregon Coast. Running a search pattern for a person in the water, directly into the seas upwind and then surfing with 'em down wind. Serious fun, but little chance of sighting a person in the water. If the body hit the windshield we might have been able to recover it on the fantail.

CG Surfmen (Surfpersons?) are the best boat handlers in the service, but one prerequisite is that you must have more balls than brains. There are young ladies that achieve this qualification too, so I'm not sure if that applies to them as well.

Whoa! I’ve been in 6-8ft breakers on a 40ft sailboat. The tide was coming out at 3knts and a 15-20 knot wind was blowing against the current. That was more fun than I want to experience.

Maybe Six Flags should build a Surf Boat ride.

I'm guessing that a lot of that video was shot at the Columbia River Bar area of Oregon.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I'd do that only if I had a eight point harness to strap me in to a serious seat - and it was in a virtual reality machine.

Hat's off to the CG for doing this for US.

Wish I was 25 again. Bless 'em all for what they do for us. Makes you wonder what the boarding parties did wrong.
