The Marines and Berkeley, California
The outrages continue. I hope Simon does not get the wrong impression of all of this. And people wonder why they get called the Looney Left?

Can it get worse? Of course it can. Today's update, the part where the mayor calls for the evacuation of the Marines from Berkeley. You cannot make this stuff up.

The whacky wight wing wesponse:
...Senator Jim DeMint's (R, S.C.) efforts to revoke Federal funding that flows into the town of Berkeley, California over their recent decision to throw out military recruiters from within the confines of the city. U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., says the City of Berkeley, Calif., no longer deserves federal money.
DeMint was angered after learning that the Berkeley City Council voted this week to tell the U.S. Marine Corps to remove its recruiting station from the city's downtown.
"This is a slap in the face to all brave service men and women and their families," DeMint said in a prepared statement. "The First Amendment gives the City of Berkeley the right to be idiotic, but from now on they should do it with their own money."
"If the city can’t show respect for the Marines that have fought, bled and died for their freedom, Berkeley should not be receiving special taxpayer-funded handouts," he added.
DeMint said he will draft legislation to rescind any earmarks dedicated for the City of Berkeley in the recently passed appropriations bill — which his office tallied to value about $2.1 million. He said that any money taken back would be transferred to the Marines.
DeMint's office provided a preliminary list of items that would be subject to his proposal:- $975,000 for the University of California at Berkeley, for the Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service, which may include establishing an endowment, and for cataloguing the papers of Congressman Robert Matsui.
- $750,000 for the Berkeley/Albana ferry service.
- $243,000 for the Chez Panisse Foundation, for a school lunch initiative to integrate lessons about wellness, sustainability and nutrition into the academic curriculum.
- $94,000 for a Berkeley public safety interoperability program.
- $87,000 for the Berkeley Unified School District, nutrition education program.
Excellent. If they hate the U.S.A. so much, why should they benefit from our tax dollars?...and can you believe we're paying for all this crap anyway??!!

Excellent example of Berkley's idea of Free Speech. I'm only suprised they didn't have support for Battlebro, VT on their agenda.

"and can you believe we're paying for all this crap anyway?"
Now that I'm no longer convulsed with laughter, I can respond. This means that we're spending almost a quarter million dollars on a program in Berkeley that, in essence, says, "eat your vegetables"? And nearly a million dollars to organize the papers of a congressman? Didn't we already pay for a couple of secretaries to do that while he was in office? And then yet another $90k to repeat, "eat your vegetables" in case the quarter mil missed anybody?
If I were more cynical, I'd say that the Fed's and Berkeley truly deserve each other, but I'm reminded that this is your's and my money being spent here!

Strangely (or maybe not), this is probably the majority Canadian view: Americans are a great people trapped in a circus tent by a bunch of clowns on amphetamines. You are considering nominating a guy, Obama, who has said NOTHING about policy that isn't a sound bite containing the word "change".
Ooh, change must be good, right?
And does anyone say "Obama's speeches are 99% feel-good rhetoric delivered in a cafe-au-lait Kennedy style (another U.S. president who delivered stirring speeches about very little)". Instead, it's about "is he black enough, or too black?"
Good grief. Your armies are spinning their wheels in conflicts that armies can't necessarily solve. I can't move money fast enough out of there. Your economy is melting. I might buy Portuguese sardine futures...at least that's a stable investment.
And the headlines are, night after night, about...nothing. Britney Spears, Heath Ledger...watch the puppets dance.
Speak out about it? It'll cost you. This guy got fired for not playing the game, the game of "here we are now: entertain us."
