Question Boat on the Cover '08 Defender Catalog????

OKay...I am stumped. I received my 08 Defender catalog yesterday and was sitting here just kind of gazing at the photo of the Trawler on the cover, then as I started to really look at the boat...I saw what appears to be two head sails, side by side???? Then there are these things off either side that look like serious outriggers????

What is this...I have never seen anything like it????

MY curiosity caused me to look for an answer, here it is...

http://www.saltytales.com/Images/Boa...%2065%20US.pdf

SO the two sails are for either tack, strange I think. The "outrigger" as I thought are actually paravanes, or roll damping devices. Guess I don't know much about them motorized boat

Here another link to the boat with a nice full picture...

A sail for either tack isn't that strange if you look at all the gear that would block you from tacking a single head sail.

As far as motor boats go, thats a purdy one. I think trawlers and tugs are pretty cool.

I think the Ranger Tug 21 is pretty slick, there is one in our marina. Up close it looks nicely detailed.

The outriggers are probably used to deploy "flopper stopper" type devices to minimize rolling at anchor.
http://www.setsail.com/dashew/rollcontrol.html

T37's linked article says:
The sturdy
Portuguese bridge protects against green water; a glossy teak caprail
crowns all external railings. In addition, like the vessels of the late 1800’s,
Wanderbird is propelled not only by a single engine—a Caterpillar 3408—but
is also outfitted with sails. Yachttech built the rigging for port and starboard
genoas and a steadying sail flies from the upper-deck mast. The mast also
carries stabilizer poles—that lock into the crosstree—and control flopper
stoppers (also called paravanes or stabilizing fish), a roll-dampening device.

My daughter pointed at the pictures and said "Oh, we should get That!" Looks like she is going to have to get a job.

The article also states that with the sails flying the boat is able to obtain a whole 1 knot of speed...wow! Impressive that it has a 6000 mile range though.

I'll bet that 1 Knot helps with fuel consumption though!

When you own a 3.5 million dollar boat, fuel consumption is the least of your worries. Stripper and blow consumption is to be closely monitored though, would hate to run out.
