Retirement. How far away is it for you?
A comment on the AFOC thread made me wonder how long it is before you all plan to retire. For those of you that are retired, what age did it happen for you, and how did you incorporate the sailing lifestyle into that?
I'll start. I entered into my current, and final, career(I will always work, just not a career anymore) at the age of 35. I plan to go no further than 55. My son will be graduating high school at the same time. So, my plan is to get my boat a few years prior to that and start working out the kinks. I have already started a list of boats to look at. I may even be able to shorten my target date by a few years due to vacation and sick time, etc, so I could be looking at 2018. In the meantime, I'll charter and sail on other boats, and maybe buy something in the 20' range to play around with. Then, when I get the big boat, I will rent out my house and take off on a journey.

Retirement
Retired at age 49,almost three years ago. Still surviving. My life now revolves around sailing. Life's short.

Planning for semi-retirement at age 50, this is when I can do what I want.
Over the next 8-10 years save as much as I can. Right now that is a good amount. At that point my wife and I will take a 1 year cruising sabbatical to the Caribbean, my dream for a long time. When I get back get a job as a teacher and run charters and sailing lessons in the summer.
After that who knows, I may be perfectly content doing that for a long time. Not sure I ever plan on not working, I just want that work to involve my passion which is boats and the water.

The "mothership", I like that.
Life IS short!
I will always work too, working on getting my "six pack" for chartering and I have my dive masters cert. Photography will probably be factored in there too as it was my previous career.

Retired from the Navy at 40, 47 now. I work contract database support now just to shove money in the kitty.
Will really retire as soon as the wife gets tired of going to work everyday.

I screwed up and married a younger woman with "plans" which means that retirement is not an option. At the point that I disable myself sufficiently so as to not be expected to work regualrly I plan on offering my services as cabin boy to bestfriend. This is the sum total of my retirement planning. there may be a few details to work out.

Took early retirement two years ago at 56, to get out of Indiana. Only way to do it was to buy a boat. Depending on how things go, I'll either stop this summer to work some, or make it till next winter. I will have to work some though most likely until SS kicks in in 2011 (providing of course, they haven't raised the age, drained the bank or otherwise done away with it). If benefits stay at present level, I'll have more than enough to be happy and will keep cruising until I have a reason to stop.

I retired last year at age 51. I spent the summer cruising and I'm in school for the winter. I plan to sail in months with no "R" until my boat sinks. Winters are flexible. Maybe I'll sail south one day and add the months with "R's".
