One reason I don't swim in the open ocean is a story in Tania Aebi's book I've Been Around. It goes something like this.
Tania tells how the owner of a boat during a delivery she and her husband were doing decided to dive off the bow of the boat, swim around the boat and climb back up on the stern swim platform. He found it so invigorating that he did it again. About 10 seconds after he climbed out of the water a rather large shark hit the boat by the swim ladder. Needless to say, the owner stayed on the boat the rest of the delivery trip.
Out on the open ocean, we're not anywhere near the top of the food chain, and there are a lot of things that would see us as an exotic, if odd-looking, meal.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Yep, reminds me of something an old salt once told me, "when you enter the ocean, you enter the food chain"
I'll never forget that but still swim dive etc.

I do not Sir, swim with fishes.
At least not on purpose and by choice. I only snorkel in the BVI because the Admiral makes fun of me if I don't. Besides, nude snorkeling provides a unusual perspective :0

Lucky me. I can still swim nude unless the tiger shark from the original story shows up... then it will be a fight to the finish.

In truth, having had two strokes (one mid level, one minor) I live in mortal fear of having a stroke while in the water and not being able to move good enough to swim. I don't float at all.
Also, I don't swim with fish larger than those found in home aquariums. The last time I did - past November in BVI I was ridiculed into doing it by everyone on board the chartered cat I was on - despite having seen a large nasty Barracuda. When it disappeared I went in, swam out 10 feet and turned around - saw the 'cuda under the boat, and underwater perspective being what it is swear it was 3 inches from me.
I have indeed walked on water - having used the Admiral for a step ladder to get up on top. I cleared water and was dry on deck in 3 seconds.
Not proud of that moment, but it is what it is.
Hope ya'll blew beer out your noses

On a trip from California to Hawaii the CG cutter I was on had swim call every other day. I tried it but wasn't very comfortable with the idea. Especially after one guy was stung badly by a Man-O-War. From then on I volunteered to be shark guard. That's the guy who stands up on the bridge with an automatic weapon and supposedly shoots any sharks. The CO didn't like my suggestion that it would be easier and probably more productive to shoot the swimmer to distract the shark. Of course we also had a small boat in the water too.
We never saw any in the Pacific until we got to Hawaii. But when I was on a ship on the east coast we used to see them all the time, and we caught a ten foot blue shark that had been hanging around for several days. After we caught it we had to shoot if five times just to kill it.
No, I don't think swimming off your boat in the ocean is a good idea.
