Music

When I was in college I used to be really into music. I was a DJ then station manager of the college radio station. We used to discuss music, albums, musicians... Had really great times and the anecdotes of which I will not share with my kids.

At the time I was into Rock mostly. Was not interested in Opera, classical, Jazz or Blues (which I now listen to and enjoy)

I must have 300-350 vinyl records in storage; Who, Led Zeppelin, Harmonium, Jimmy Hendrix, Beatles, Eric Clapton, Lynerd Skynerd, CCR, Procol Harum, Morrison, Al Stewart, Cat Stevens...

University, work , family, world travels, financial challenges, other priorities had pushed music on the back burner. Plus, my wife is francophone and did not share my taste in music.

Well, the kids are now older (14,17,18, 26) and are listening to some of my music and I am rediscovering some really great stuff.

I now bought my own Ipod (80 gig classic) for the first time (kids have had them for years). I have read threads here where some of technologically proficient guys here have whole music libraries on Ipods/laptops etc. I have decided to go that route and will have music in the home, car, boat. I will need to ahve common playlists etc..

Today however, I stumbled on some Youtube music videos. I was looking for some Keith Moon drum solos. I came across this:

YouTube - Blue Man Group - "Baba O'Riley"

I was floored. I find it a great and original version of Baba O'reily.

Just wanted to share......

iPods and such ...

Well, Waymar, I'm not sure I share your enthusiasm for Blue Man Group, but I certainly am a huge fan of iPods and iTunes. They've completely changed the way I listen to music. It took me many winter weekends to load my CD collection onto my iPod, but now that I have everything from Beatles and Stones to Benny Goodman, Charley Patton, Carl Perkins, Frank Sinatra, and the Dropkick Murphys loaded on, it's great to be able to carry all of my music anywhere ... and to be able to listen to "Baba O'Reilly" or "Rats In My Kitchen" with just a few clicks of the wheel. And drag-and-drop playlists keep things fresh and interesting. What a great invention.

Waymar...since you mentioned vinyl, I thought I'd share this with you in case you aren't aware of it. This is the ION MP3 turntable which will output your vinyl into your PC via USB and comes with software to let you turn it into MP3 files. You also can label albums and individual tracks with titles and artists and remove noise. I actually have this thing and am working my way through my vinyl! The price is right too.

Thanks Cam, didn't know about those. A friend recently gave me his entire collection of vinyl...something like 3,000 albums...looks like I may have a good project for next winter.

With the sound card I have and the accompanying control panel on my custom built desktop unit, I can input from any sound source that I can hook up to it. Got a bunch of my MP3's off of vinyl and cassette.

I've always found the BMG interesting for their use of alternative instruments. Live, they are like very few performances I have seen (not quite comparable to a concert). I am proud to say that I am part of the revival of older music and other genres. The iPod thing though I never really got into due to my saving for a boat. Definitly convenient things to have.
