Charter guests and Oyster owners...

This is my rant - after many painkilling Caribes...

I sailed into harbour early today in order to have most of the day to get the boat ready for storage. Sometime in the early afternoon I managed to slip and break my fall with my hand and subsequently couldn't use it. I'm writing this onehanded and I think I've splintered my wrist, as it is swollen, painful and moving my fingers causes excruciating pain. Anyway, there was a group of 8 Sunsail charter guests to one side and all the other boats in the immediate vicinity are owner occupied Oysters and they saw my accident as well as seeing me go below and come back with an improvised sling.
What really irks me is that they watched me, one-handed, take at least 15 minutes trying to winch my dinghy onto the deck; i had to use body weight to move the winch around at slow speed. Then it took me another hour to get the dinghy lowered to deck and sorted ouit. During this whole time not one person offerred to help, worse yet I heard the charterers make some remark about "one armed bandit" while sipping their drinks and watching me! For me the stereotypes for both groups have confirmed themselves.

You should have struck up a conversation by asking them for help opening your jar of Grey Poupon!
Hope it's not too serious Zan...take care.

Sadly its a case of those not really embracing the maritime tradition of being a sailor. So many are so opposed to helping others - and sometimes it is a case of someone not wanting help...

Sadly, lesson learned - when you see something not right jump into it - regardless of the circumstances - always try to be better than the experiences you have been influenced with. I hope your wrist is a healing

Rockter will become famous soon enough
Zan,

If the good ship "Wine Knot" is next to you, I will help you.

I have seen this type of detachment before, mostly from the longer boats. They are just too good to help me.

It is rare, but unsettling.

Rockter -thanks for the offer, I could use it as I cannot move my fingers this morning and still need to get the bimini sorted out and the boat moved to the hardstand slipway - but you wouldn't happen to be at Nanny Cay, would you?

Take care of that arm. You should consider going ashore to have it looked at.

Get well soon.

xort - I'm returning to Europe tomorrow and will get X-rays and the wrist set then. At least I am finally using up some of my soon-to-be-expired first aid supplies to stabilize the wrist And I am in the land of "painkillers" so perhaps should self-prescribe a couple of those.

I think your wrist will already be setting by the time you get home. So it will have to be 'broken' and reset.

Believe Xort is right about the wrist...and hopefully, it won't be too much of a problem. Sorry to hear about the lack of helpfulness. I've seen that happen a bit... especially in marinas with larger boats... but in marinas with smaller boats, like mine, I haven't run into the problem.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Sorry to hear of your injury and the rudeness of your slip mates at Nanny Cay. Ironically my wife and I were pretty close to you yesterday when we sailed over near Francis Bay on St John. I sent you a PM. Take care of yourself and seek medical attention sooner rather than later.
