A spinoff from the " what do you drive " thread
So as not to hijack that topic, I figured it best to start another.
This is in regard to the Prius that has been mentioned as a environmentally safe car.
Did you know, the nickel used in the prius batteries ( and many others ) is mined and smelted at a plant in Sudbury, Ontario. This plant has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding environment that NASA has used the ‘dead zone’ around the plant to test ROV's because the area around the plant is devoid of any life for miles.
Quote:
The plant is the source of all the nickel found in a Prius’ battery and Toyota purchases 1,000 tons annually. Dubbed the Superstack, the plague-factory has spread sulfur dioxide across northern Ontario, becoming every environmentalist’s nightmare.
|
On top of that, the nickel produced by this plant is shipped by very large container ship to the largest nickel refinery in Europe. From there, the nickel is shipped to China to produce ‘nickel foam.’ From there, it goes to Japan for assembly. Finally, the completed batteries are shipped to the United States, completing a the currcumnavigation required to produce a single Prius battery.
You want to go "Green " buy a Hummer

Googling the key words came up with this rebuttle:
"This Prius myth stems from an article in the Mail on Sunday newspaper, published in the fall of 2006, with the alarmist headline, "Toyota Factory turns landscape to arid Wilderness." The article was notable for attributing over a century's worth of pollution at Sudbury, Canada, to the Prius, ignoring not only the cleanup that has gone on there since the 1970's, but also that Toyota bought less than 1% of that mine's output and that worst depredations to the landscape there came old mine techniques no longer used (burning log piles to literally "melt the ground"). The Mail rather humorously ran a stock photo from 1994 to illustrate the damage the Prius had done, missing the fact that Prius were not even made then. This myth continues to circulate, through columnists like George Will and Robert Samuelson and various right-wing blogs, although a look at the original source reveals that Daily Mail has retracted the entire story due to its inaccuracies."
I wonder what snopes says... All in favour of Hummers.
And then Mr. Green Answers: Are Hummers Really Greener Than Hybrids? « Please Do Not Tap On the Glass

Oh yeah, well I heard that 'Poopdeck Pappy' is the CEO of General Motors. He used to go by 'Pappy' until he went to fill up his Hummer one day. After paying for the gas and subsequently cleaning himself up, he is now called Poopdeck Pappy.
Of course, this is all speculation. I have no real proof!! HEHE!

The only part you got wrong was the Hummer and CEO part, everything else is spot on, I just filled up the morning........last I heard the filling station had to call the boatyard for the preasure washer

Probably not, as a lot of raw material gets shipped to China for manufacture these days, only to be shipped onward for retail. So what's wrong with shipping nickels and buying dimes?

An interesting sidebar. Really, if we were at all concerned we'd keep the car we've got until it expires because building anything new is a tremendous toll on the environment.
Use it,
Wear it out,
Make it do, or
Do without.

Really, kinda like wants happening at the Port of LA, we unload 1000's ships from China,Japan, Tiwan with 4000 containers each and send them home empty day in day out.
But, the point is, the environmental impact ( mining, shipping, assembly disposing or recycling) ) done to produce these batts ( not just in North America ) must far out weigh the reduced impact they suppose to have, not to mention the short life span of the batt

Poopy,
My Norelco shaver has nickel cadmium. I am very depressed now. Every morning when I shaved, I thought, "I am saving the environment with my electric razor... much like Al Gore..." It always put a smile on my face... you know, doing my part to save the world.
ANd now you have me all depressed. My nickel cad is bad. I wiped out Canada just to shave my face. I cannot imagine what my wife did with her legs. Oh well... their Ice Hockey sucks up there anyways.
I really wish now I was getting old and bald like Giulietta so I would not have to worry about shaving anything but the hair coming out of my ears or growing off my back. I could probably just cut that with some lawn trimmers and not use a razor at all.
Thanks a lot. First, $100 gas, now I am cannot shave. You have really depressed me. I have lost all sense of humor.
Oh well,
- CD
